Claude Frank "Frenchy" Pickman obituary

Claude Pickman Obituary

Pickman, Claude Frank 'Frenchy' 84 June 14, 1927 Sept. 08, 2011 Frank was born in Paris, France. He immi-grated, with his mother, to the U.S. during World War II. Frank entered the U.S. Army at age 18, automatically becoming a U.S. citizen. Frank received apprentice training as a jeweler in Europe. That training led him to work in some of the finest jewelry houses in New York and San Francisco, honing his skills to the level of Master Jeweler. He went on to establish Custom Craft Jewelry Mfg. Co., selling jewelry in 21 states. Later he opened The Jewelers Bench in Sellwood. There he created special pieces for his customers, who soon became friends. Frank's passion for creativity and expertise was passed on as he trained some of the finest jewelers in the Portland area. He loved working with his hands, as demonstrated in his jewelry, wood crafting, home remodels and building projects for neighbors. The pleasure and precision with which Frank lived life led him to attain, in golfing, the elusive hole-in-one twice. Golfing took him to El Centro, Calif. The past 12 winters he enjoyed the friendship of those folks he considered to be his extended family of Canadians and Americans. Frank leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Sandra; daughter, Claudia Cowan of Richmond, Calif.; and brother, Paul of San Francisco. His son, Steven Mark Pickman died in 1996. Frank's family was with him for a celebration of life at the beach in Seaside when he passed away. At his request, there will be no public service. A private celebration was held at Woodburn Senior Estates Park. He and his dog, Mandy, along with other "Furry Friends" and their owners had daily enjoyed time together at the park. In lieu of flowers, it is requested donations be made to a charity of your choice. Among his choices were Doctors Without Borders and Willamette Valley Hospice.

Sometimes you are lucky to have people come into your life and become special freinds. Frenchy and Sandy are those such people. Frenchy told me he could never say no to me when asking him to make another special piece of jewelry. After all these years I have every piece that he designed and created for me and my family. When one piece was finished I couldn't wait for the next! We will miss this special sweet man. He meant so much to me. Thank you Sandy for sharing.

Sincere condolences to Sandy and the Pickman family. My mother and step father, Kenny and Evelyn Alexander, were close friends for many years and enjoyed "the good life" with Frenchy and Sandie as fellow Elks/Elkettes and golf buddies. Frenchie was always so kind and patient and designed and repaired many jewelry pieces for my mother, Evelyn. In fact, just this week I was admiring her ring and talking about how he was a designer for Cartier and designed her wedding ring (she didn't know it at the time). We will always remember Frenchy's many kindnesses and the gift of friendship he shared with our family. The jewelry pieces he designed and repaired for us will always bring fond memories of such a gifted and kind person...one of the treasures of life's journey. He will be missed...

Although it has been many years since we were social friends. I have fond memories of many trips with Sandra & Frenchy to Mt. Hood and southern California. He was such a talented craftsman, I have a special ring that he designed and think of him often. My condolences to the family. (Anderson Bros. Jewelers)

45 years ago Frank designed and made our wedding rings. Although Vance is gone, I still wear mine today and receive compliments on the beautiful work he did. I am so sorry for your loss, Sandy and family.

Oh, Frenchy, you were my very first boss at my first real job...I was 18 yrs old and I am now 60. I was the Girl Friday at Custom Craft. You were one great guy...and, Sandy... I remember you coming into the office now and then...I offer my sincere sympathy to the family. Sue Dobson (formerly Haupt; daughter of Annette)
