Frances D. Carew

Carew, Frances D. 89 Sept. 17, 1921 July 28, 2011 Frances was born and grew up in Hartford, Conn. At 18, she became one of the youngest licensed female pilots in the U.S. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1943. After college she worked in New York for several years as a Spanish/English translator for W.R. Grace & Co. In 1945 she married Howard Joseph Carew from Murray Hill, N.J. Interests Frances shared with her husband were sailing, skiing, tennis and gardening. In 1946 they moved to York, Pa., to start a business. They had three children, Susan Boulding of Boulder, Colo., (deceased); Michael Carew of York; and Peter Carew of Lake Oswego. Frances and Howard were happily married until his death in 1987. In York, she was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church and an active community volunteer. In 2003 Frances moved with her dog, Bonnie, to Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego. There she enjoyed bridge, books and dining with many new friends. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal Parish. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at Mary's Woods, and later in August in York. She is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
