Harold T. "Ron" Krug

Krug, Harold T. 'Ron' 92 Dec. 19, 1918 Dec. 07, 2011 Harold T. "Ron" Krug, 92, passed away peacefully. Born in Harvard, Neb., Ron served as an officer in the Fourth Air Force during WWII. In 1945, he married Gerda Joyt and together they shared 66 years of life and four children. Also in 1945, Ron graduated from Harvard University with a master's degree in Business Administration. He also attended Denver University, American University, Southeastern University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ron's federal service began Sept. 1, 1939, as personal secretary to Gen. Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, Chief of the USAF, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Munitions Bldg., Constitution Ave., Washington, D.C. This provided the unforgettable occasion of meeting and talking with Gen. Stonewall Jackson III. In June 1942, after receiving his B.A., Ron was appointed to the position of Federal Reserve Bank examiner (the youngest ever at age 23) with the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C. Ron was one of very few federal employees to advance from a Grade GS-1 (the lowest) to Grade GS-16 (the highest) in Federal Career Service. He worked in the Department of Agriculture regional offices in Minneapolis; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Kansas City, Mo.; the Department of Veterans Affairs regional offices in Denver and Minneapolis; and the Postal Service regional offices in Wichita, Kan.; Portland; Seattle; and San Francisco. Ron first moved to Portland in 1956. He was president of the Valley-Hi Chapter of the American Primrose Society and the Tualatin Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. He was a member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church and the Portland Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. Surviving are his beloved wife, Gerda; son, Paul (Christi) of Vancouver; daughters, Carol Featherstone of Sequim, Wash., and Lindee Cunningham of Newport; trusty canine, Tera; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A private memorial was held at his home nestled in the trees and rhododendrons he adored.
