Kunz, Larry J. 'Bud' 92 Feb. 11, 1920 April 23, 2012 After 92 wonderful years, Larry Kunz passed away peacefully in his home while surrounded by his family. Larry J. Later, Larry, with his only brother, Albert, took over ownership of the company. On March 11, 1951 Larry married Eileen Virginia Fox. Bud was such a personality...I loved that about him. Always quick with a comment, or a look, you always knew where he stood on an issue. He always left me wanting one more conversation with him.

I met Bud just a few short years ago but his impact was direct and profound - just like him! His wit, humor, dedication, and especially caring nature shine on.

Bud Kunz was a special guy.
He was a proud man, an impactive father and a true friend to many. But I'll remember him best for his wisdom and the spirit that he would convey each time I had the privilege to visit with him. "How's business?" and "How about them Ducks?"
I loved the guy.

FIRST OF ALL, IT WAS VERY SAD FOR ME TO SEE THAT BUD PASSED AWAY AND I SEND MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY.
MY CONNECTION WITH BUD AND AL INVOLVES A BIT OF PERSONAL HISTORY.
WHEN I THINK BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD A WEEKLY RITUAL WAS TO GO SHOPPING WITH MY FATHER, ANTHONY J. BARBUR (TONY). WE WOULD DRIVE UP TO THE S.P. MARKET IN MY DAD'S 1950 LIGHT GREEN CHEVY AND USUALLY MY FATHER WOULD GET OUT OF THE CAR WHISTLING A MOZART PIECE . WE WOULDN'T GO IN TO THE MARKET IMMEDIATELY, BUT WOULD GO NEXT DOOR TO THE TINY LIBRARY BRANCH, A NARROW POSTAGE STAMP OF A PLACE WITH UNTOLD TREASURES. MY DAD WOULD GET A STACK OF HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE BOOKS AS HE WAS A VORACIOUS READER, ALTHOUGH A CITY WORKER BY PROFESSION.
I WOULD GET MY FEW BOOKS AND WOULD LOOK AT POPULAR MECHANICS.
COMPLETING THIS PART OF THE RITUAL, WE WOULD THROW THE BOOKS IN THE CAR AND GO NEXT DOOR TO WHERE I KNEW THE CHOPPED HAM WAS GOING TO BE OFFERED BY EITHER BUD OR AL.
I REMEMBER AL WHO WORE GOLD SPECTACLES AND LOOKED LIKE A MILD,SCHOOL TEACHER, ALTHOUGH HE WORE A BUTCHER APRON AND BUD WHO I BELIEVE BELIEVE HAD EITHER A SCAR ON HIS FACE OR A SCAR ON HIS HAND OR PART OF A MISSING FINGER. I'M NOT SURE ON THIS PART OF THE MEMORY AS I WAS 7 YEARS OLD AND THAT WAS 56 YEARS AGO.
I DO REMEMBER THE SHINY BLACK AND WHITE LINOLEUM FLOORS AND THE SMELL OF CLEANER IN THE AIR. DAD WOULD ORDER CHOPPED HAM FOR MY LUNCHES, AND INEVITABLY, EITHER BUD OR AL WOULD LEAN OVER THE GLASS CASES AND HAND ME A SLICE.
I NOTED IN THE OBITUARY THAT BUD ATTENDED HOSFORD AND BENSON. MY DAD DID TOO. HE DIED IN 2003 AT 92 YEARS OF AGE.
IF I HAVE MY MEMORIES STRAIGHT, MY DAD WOULD TELL ME ABOUT BUD AND AL'S PARENTS HAVING A BUTCHER FURTHER DOWN DIVISION, AND GETTING MEATS FROM THEM WHICH THE ITALIAN COMMUNITY AROUND 7 CORNERS AND ST. PHILLIP NERI CHURCH WOULD PRESERVE AT HOME. MY DAD AND YOUR DAD WERE PART OF THE SAME COMMUNITY, HAD HISTORY AND KNEW EACH OTHER WELL.
MY RAMBLINGS MAY NOT MEAN MUCH TO YOU, BUT I COUNT THOSE TRIPS TO S.P. MEAT MARKET ON SATURDAYS AS A TIME OF SECURITY, WARMTH AND A BALANCED WORLD. I WAS JUST TELLING MY WIFE AS WE WAITED AT A STOP LIGHT ON 21ST AND POWELL, ABOUT MY SATURDAY ADVENTURES TO THE MARKET. BUD AND AL ARE IN MY THOUGHTS, AS WELL AS MY BELOVED FATHER. RON BARBUR
