Mary Dougherty Obituary

Dougherty, Mary Barbara 82 April 06, 1929 July 16, 2011 Mary Barbara Dougherty passed away in Scottsdale, Ariz., at Silverado Senior Living. Barbara was born in Portland to Paul and Lena Ryan. She attended Holy Redeemer Grade School and Holy Child Academy High School. After graduating high school, Barbara attended the University of Portland and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Barbara worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent's before having children. She went back to school and updated her RN license after her children were older and then enjoyed many years as an industrial nurse, visiting industrial sites and ships. On Sept. 19, 1953, Barbara married Raymond Dougherty. They had three sons, Dan Dougherty of Kenmore, Wash.; Paul Dougherty of Hillsboro, Ore.; and John Dougherty of Paradise Valley, Ariz. Barbara and Ray lived in Bremerton, Wash.; Portland; Los Angeles, Calif.; and finally back to Portland in 1966. Barbara cultivated friends in every location and maintained these friendships over the years, especially her nursing classmates. She was an avid Bridge player and a member of the Rose City Yacht Club and the American Association of University Women. Charming and effervescent, Mary Barbara lit up every room. She always made you feel special. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Dougherty, and is survived by her sons; brother, John Ryan of Portland; and grandchildren, Jeff, Ashley, Jenna and Olivia. Viewing will start at 4 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011, at the family home. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday July 23, at The Madeleine Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery following the funeral Mass.

Having known Barbara for many years, through my husband Ed Riverman and Lee and Duke Ryan, I was sad to hear of her passing and would like to add my prayers for her family. She was a great person, and I might add, a lot of fun. Sincerely, Tamara Riverman & Family.

I was in the Portland AAUW with Barbara. We were in the Art Enjoyment group together and she always asked after my family when we met. She did truly know how to make one feel special.

Sorry for your families loss. Your mom did make everyone feel special and as if they were very special to her. She was always interested in our family and what we were up to. She was interested in whatever we were up to. She could talk with anyone. We are in Seattle at a commitment with Caleb Jeff's son to stay with him as Jeff and Kelley are off to a wedding in Spokane. Know that your mom is in the hands of God our father and smiling down on all. Fred and Crystal Johnson

So sorry to hear of your mom's death. We've enjoyed knowing her over the years, seeing her at Fred Meyers or elsewhere. What a great lady!

Ed and Cora Mae Goffard

The Goffard family lived across the street on N.E. 27th for many, many years, and has countless memories of so many great times at the Dougherty's house. So many fun times with all the kids up and down the street, the "grown up" parties, too!. Barbara was always a very kind and great hostess - just a wonderful neighbor and gracious lady. Ed, Cora Mae, Brian and Sandra Goffard Hay (brother Greg would certainly agree, no doubt).

We were sorry to learn of Barbara's death. We've lived across the street from her for 16 years and have many fond memories. She always came to our annual spook house party in the basement - which was loud, dark, wild & scary - AND she always came late because she had other parties to attend before ours! She'll be missed on the block.
