Richard Flury Obituary

Flury, Richard Werner 76 July 12, 1935 Dec. 23, 2011 Richard Werner Flury, 76 years old, of Camas, Wash. passed away on Dec. 23, 2011, in the arms of his wife of 22 years, Julie Alge Flury. After struggling with pulmonary fibrosis in 2007, he was the recipient of a successful lung transplant in 2008. Dick had overcome many challenges and obstacles. It was with fight, grace and dignity that he lost his battle, but not before cherishing three more years of his life enjoying traveling, his family and friends. He was born on July 12, 1935, in Portland to Werner Flury and Mary Grosjaques Flury. Dick was raised in Portland and attended Benson High School. After high school, Dick attended Portland State University and eventually bought the family business, Moreland Sanitary Service, from his father. Several years later he added Columbia Sanitary service and Krenning Sanitary service. Being the entrepreneur, Dick also bought into Columbia Wire and Iron with his father-in-law, Alfred Leu. Dick had a variety of pursuits including golf, cars, travel, fishing and gardening. With his gift of wood working and ornamental steel fabrication, much of his beautiful creations are appreciated daily in his home, and the homes of his children, stepchildren and friends. His love for travel has taken him to many places around the world with Mexico being a favorite, so much so that he and his wife purchased a home there where they would spend many weeks a year enjoying retirement. Last year he visited his daughter in London, walked the beaches at Normandy, sang in an Irish pub and reveled with friends in the Greek Islands. He loved spending time at their little casita on the beach in the Baja enjoying his VIVA friends. Dick is survived by his wife, Julie; four children, Christopher (Lisa) Flury, Scott Flury, Leslie (Christopher) Anderle and Suzanne Flury; his older brother, Robert Flury; five children by marriage, Lori Boyack, Lisa (Jesse) Riddle, Jeffery (Kitty) Foote, Sean (Mia) Foote and Courtney (Tom) Elliott; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, who will all miss Grandpa's hugs and loves. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Holy Redeemer Church (17010 NE 9th St, Vancouver WA 98684) at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the parish hall. The family suggests remembrance in Richard's name to the Oregon Chapter of the American Lung Association or your local hospice. Special thanks to Dr. Louis Libby at the Oregon Clinic and the Community Home Health Hospice.

Perfect picture of Dick! Dick was my Godfather, and I always felt that made me a little more special than the next person! He taught me how to water ski when I was a teenager. Some of my all time best memories are going to his house and playing with his kids. "Goodnight, Sweet Prince; and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." Love, Cousin Nancy GrosJacques

We loved Dick and he will be greatly missed. It seems like yesterday when we were at the ocean in Portland, Courtney's wedding, and then at Daniel's wedding and it always seemed like Dick had an amazing ability to make people feel loved and included; with Dick you felt like you were always at the grown-up table. We will be with you in spirit on Saturday. Love Barbara and Cailin.
