Robert Lee Obituary

Lee, Robert A. 94 April 25, 1917 Nov. 10, 2011 Robert A. Lee, 94, died Nov. 10. Born on April 25, 1917 to Mathilde and Sigurd Lee, Bob was raised in Portland and attended University of Oregon, where he met his future wife, Catherine Taylor. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1938 and began his career in journalism, working as reporter and news editor for the Oregonian and then as an editor for the New York Times. He retired in 1980 and returned with Katy to Portland. He served in the Navy during WWII. He had a lifelong interest in history, politics, and the arts and was an avid golfer. He was devoted to family and friends, who enjoyed his compassion, intelligence, and wit and will miss him deeply. Bob is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Fred Ostmann of Tacoma, Wash.; sons and daughters-in-law Daniel and Nelma Lee of Portland, and Robert and Laura Lee of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Heather Ostmann, Lilah Helton, and Natalie Lee; and great-granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Despain. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years; and his brother, Norman. A memorial is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Donations may be made to the Oregon Food Bank or Portland Rescue Mission in lieu of flowers.

We so enjoyed Bob and Kathy, after they returned to Portland for retirement, becoming acquainted with them at St. Luke. Both we so articulate and interesting. It is now doubt you will miss both of them dearly, as I know your Mom predeceased your Dad. They certainly were a joy to know. George and Sharon Pantely

What a beautiful description of your father's life. It was very rich with experience. I can see the extent of his influence...(keen intelligence, wit, liberal politics, kindness--all, really, except golf). You are lucky to have had such a father, and to have had him in your life so long.
