Robert Schneider Obituary

Schneider, Robert 'Bob' 62 April 16, 1949 Oct. 12, 2011 Bob died after a long struggle with cancer. Born in San Francisco to Daisy and Melvin Schneider, Bob had a natural talent for applied physics and earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Davis. He had a successful career with Carollo Engineers of San Francisco and found time to enjoy the many outdoor activities the Bay Area had to offer, especially sailing, skiing, golfing, mountain biking and windsurfing. Bob moved to Portland in 1998 and retired from HDR Engineering Co. to pursue his passion of handcrafting mandolins, earning rave reviews from bluegrass aficionados for the beauty and the sound of his instruments. He was active in playing and singing bluegrass music with a number of local musicians and was often present at bluegrass music festivals held in the Pacific Northwest along with his constant companion, Alex-the-dog. Bob is survived by his sister, Irita Vultaggio; brother-in-law, Gap of Roseville, Calif.; nephew, David Gonzales of San Jose, Calif.; niece, Vicki Remmel of San Jose; and many dear friends in Portland and the Bay Area including Kerry and Amelia, Laura and Carl, Sallie, Roz and Jan, Mark and Chris, Jeanie, Georgia, Dix, Jack, Tim and Janet, Kathleen, and Kristi, just to name a few. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date.

I often remember the wonderful times I had jamming with Bob, and the many great adventures we shared along the way. Our friendship started as roommates in Los Gatos, and continued for several years afterward. I'll be performing again this weekend, and will dedicate these gigs to he and his family. Miss you my Brother.

Even though I haven't seen you in YEARS, you were a big part of my life for the 2.5 years that we were "going steady", you were my first love, we had some good times Bob and you were a great guy!
Rest in Peace,
Joan

Bob was not only a mentor but a friend. We had a lot of fun times together hanging out. Although Bob was a slightly better golfer, we both determined that we should keep our day jobs and put tour aspirations aside. No matter how stressful things got at work, there was always time for a brief discussion about motorcycles. I will miss him.

Bob will be missed. He had an infectious sense of humor and attention to detail in everything he did - whether it was the engineering, the mandolins, or any of the myriad of interests he pursued. One of my fondest memories with Bob was when he purchased a motocycle while we were walking a pipeline alignment. He never failed to amaze. My condolences to his family and friends.

Bob was not only a terrific human being, he was a friend that I will remember always. Bob and I met when we became roomates back in Las Gatos, CA many years ago. At that time we also realized that we both loved music, and soon started jamming together. Music has always been part of our lives and conversations over our many years of friendship. I always admired his talent for tinkering and making things, beautiful things - a true artist! I'll always cherish the memory of our being in a Hobie Cat race on Clear Lake and also spending time with his folks, the many laughs we shared together, but most of all the music we created. My prayers go out to his family and I hope they can be comforted by knowing that so many people cherish the time they shared with him -a very special person - Peace My Brother - Always....

Bob was such a sweet, kind friend. He came to visit me in Maui a number of years ago. We stayed in touch fairly frequently and I will miss our communication and loving friendship. He was so talented as a musician, woodworker, engineer, mechanic and anything he directed his attention to. His spirit was tender and caring. His strong attitude was always positive, and he was ever grateful to the doctor who provided such great care. We both loved our dogs fiercely and Alec provided such loyal companionship. May his sister and family be comforted. He will be missed immensely, and remember by the joy he added to my life.

Bobby..I can't believe you are gone.... will never forget the many sleepovers when we made paper airplanes and tried to land them on the cardboard aircraft carrier in your garage. yours always landed perfect and you just laughed when mine couldn't even hit the cardboard. the many vacations at clear lake, learning to water ski. we used to stay up all night fishing. you made us spear guns out of coat hangers...and we shot tons of fish. playing baseball and football together....we were inseparable...i will miss you and i will never forget you. give your mom and dad a big hug for me and when you see my mom...give her a big kiss for me and tell her that i miss her.......your buddy....jerry

What memories I have of Bob, we grew up in the same neighborhood he was my brothers (Jerry Schnell's) best friend, I was the little sister and Bob was my first Crush. He was so great to me and taught me alot about myself. We have continued to be in touch via Email, but he stopped writing about 9 months ago. I wish I could have said goodbye. I remember so many things about him, I will always have a special place in my heart for him, I know he is at peace!

The time I always spent with Bob was filled with music. He taught me how to play by ear on the violin and attempted to teach me how to play the mandolin. The first song I ever learned by ear, that he taught me, was Green Sleeves. When Bob, my mom, and I camped out in Wallowa I remember all of us sitting around the campfire and jamming with other musicians. I still to this day play the violin and every time I pick up the violin he gave me, I think of him.

The Florida Maddox family also feel the loss of Bob greatly--Martha & Emery, Kerry & Amelia, Rod & Susan, Maggie and Nolan . We have had great fun on Bob's visits here. We even had him here for one Thanksgiving and one Christmas and a week together at a beach house on the Gulf of Mexico. We were entertained by his music and other members of the family couldn't resist joining in. Emery and I met Bob on the same day we met Amelia after she arrived in Portland. He was so personable, kind, fun, funny, helpful--We are grateful for the 11 years he was an extended part of our family and will remember him fondly forever. Martha Maddox

My dearest Uncle. I have known you all 50 years of my life. You taught me to throw a football, drive a stick, you took me sailing. We have shared every Thanksgiving and Christmas with the whole family since I can remember. It won't be the same without you. I will miss you sooo much. Rest in Peace my loving Uncle Bob.

I had great pleasure in working with Bob for years at Carollo in Walnut Creek. Wife Mary Ann & I windsurfed with him in the Bay and at his folks' place at Clear Lake. Batted many tennis balls at each other. He & I flew (and crashed) HIS radio control sailplanes. Just yesterday, rode the Kawasaki motorcycle he sold to me 20 plus yrs. ago (belonged to Howard Way before that). The door harp he made for us is displayed in our wall unit still.

Bob, your laughter and sense of humor will be missed. But Mary Ann & I will remember you always. I am happy to see so many that we both knew are expressing these same emotions to you and your family on this forum.

Be at peace sir ....

I offer my sincere condolences to Bob's family and close friends. Bob and I worked together on several projects as ell as being friends. Bob was also a master craftsman, building remote control aircraft, High quality mandolins, sailing surfboards, and thin wood canoes

Bob's attitude and drive were inspirational. He was very proud of his fathers early pioneering with free flight model airplanes.

Although bob and I have not seen each other for a few years, he discuss mandolins with my nephew David, who is a musician in Nashville, has heard rave reviews of his work.

Bob will be greatly missed.
