Spero Theofilatos Obituary

A Jupiter man was killed in plane crash Saturday afternoon in California, the Riverside Press Enterprise newspaper reported.
The paper reported that Spero Theofilatos, 50, was a passenger in a single engine plane that went down near Lake Mathews, south of Riverside, Calif.

Jupiter Christian head wrestling coach Robin Ruh said Monday night that Theofilatos was an assistant wrestling coach at the school. Ruh said that he did not wish to comment on Theofilatos' death.

"It's a tough time for everybody," he said.

The Riverside paper said that Timothy Richard Larson, 41, of Moreno, Valley, Calif., who was piloting the plane, also was killed. The plane took off from the Corona Municipal Airport at 1:30 p.m. for a local flight. When it did not return, a friend of the victims reported the plane missing, the newspaper reported.

Spero,

I cant believe weve been out of touch for so long. You cant even imagine my surprise in finding out you are gone.

Ill always remember you as the best flight instructor and employee I ever had. The times we spent flying or just hanging out together at North Florida or CJs are some of my favorite memories. I still share the blind touch and go training stories with my A&P classes.

Rest In Peace my friend. Someday well get a chance to reunite and relive the old days.

Dear Spero, my friend, I was blessed to have spent time with you in the great sport of wrestling. We roomed together at the OTC and paled round that summer. We also spent time hanging out in Concordia, as well as, at the Olympic Sports Festival. You always had a smile on your face and were easy to get along with. Remember, the time we were chased by a huge raccoon in Colorado Springs. Boy we ran like hell. We also made out like bandits when trading the Russians in Concordia. I'm glad I touch based with you 2008/09. RIP my friend your buddy - Jim "Jimmy" Sanchez.

Dear Spero: I met you many years ago through a mutual friend, Paul McCullough, when you guys were wrestling together. You were always a special person, memorable and unique, and so very talented. I found out about the accident while surfing the web. I know now that it was important that I knew. Rest in Peace my friend...Joe P.

I'm shocked to hear the news here on a layover in LAX today.
A nicer guy than Spero does not exist, you brought genuine happiness to people's hearts . We have had many a happy beer together in Goma, shared some tall tales and you always flying faster than my BAC 1-11 in your B-727 on the way to Kinshasa, Lubumbashi or Mbuji-Mayi.

Corona Airport & Z-Air was my home in 1988-90 before I met you in Zaire, and Lake Mathews was our training area. I can not believe what I have just heard and read.

My deepest condolences to Kyky and Nick.

Spero, the best friend a guy could have! Some of my best memories of wrestling are from working with you assisting at Charles Flanagan H.S. in FL. The kids sure had a great teacher in you, and I learned working alongside you with those characters. "Pummel-in!" you would urge them. There wasn't a wrestler on the team you wouldn't go with including 275 lb. Ruben Bulgin who placed at States, but of course, it was about how to help them improve their skills, and not about beating them-but you did!I recall riding motorcycles along A1A up to Delray Beach to go to Elwood's to listen to some blues. Two of my favorite things-the blues and riding motorcycles, and who better to do it with than Spero on his BMW R1200C? I recall using the flight simulator down on 36 St in Miami and how patiently you coached me to try my takeoff and landing, even though I wasn't a pilot, and then we had margaritas in a dark bar down the street, and talked about family, wrestling, and life. I remember sharing meals with Kyky and Nick in Pembroke Pines, and how you always had the newest BOSE system, the coolest bike (BMW) or car (the screaming-yellow Plymouth Prowler) and how you always thought of your friends and family. I have that silk wrestling tie you brought back for a few friends, and that along with many great memories I will have for the rest of my life. Kyky and Nick, I am proud to have had Spero as a good friend, as well as you, and I will always remember him for his committment to enduring friendships.

I wrestled with Spero at The State University of NY at Albany for two years back in 1981 and 1982. Of course, Spero was far more talented than I was but of all the people I wrestled with back then, I always thought of Spero and how kind he was to me and what a good friend he was. Always smiling. He worked with me so patiently at practice and then beat me up quite soundly when we wrestled live. I often wondered how he was nowadays and I am so happy to see that he had a wonderful life and I am so sorry that he has passed away. My condolences to all who loved him.

I was very saddened to hear of Speros passing and send my condolences to his family. We wrestled together at Albany High for many years and always had to wrestle off for the spot. We had a great time and I have to admit he was the finest wrestler and person I had the chance to meet and compete against. My heartfelt prayers to his family. He will be missed.

Spero,
I am so glad you stayed in LAS with me recently, after passing each other in the blue skies for almost a year... you were a great friend and I will never forget how we toasted Tim's 40th birthday last year while in DXB.
Life has a funny way of coming full circle. Goodbye my friend- I am sure we will meet again one day....

Dear Spero,

I can’t even express in words what it means to me having had you in my life. You are the best friend anyone could ever ask for. I am grateful that I got to spend the last days with you and saddened that they were the last, but just know that you live on forever in our hearts.

You wanted to come celebrate my 30th birthday with me, before I left to see my family in Europe. You have always been there for me as a friend and a great spirit, believing in me and being supportive in any way you could. If it wasn’t for you, my life and the life of many would not be where and how they are today, and for that we are eternally grateful. I chose to celebrate your life instead of mourning your passing, as I know you lived your life 100%. The last day I can tell you all, that Spero was very happy, like a little kid in a candy store, he got to do what he loved doing the most, flying! He wanted for my birthday to share this experience with me and had a big smile on his face.

That is one of those things about life; if you get to live it, you eventually have to give it up. I want to tell everybody this: Live in the moment of now, that is all you have. Live it honestly and with conviction; respect it and others, most importantly love yourself so you can share that love with others. I know Spero knew you loved him, so don't stop talking with him, he is still with you in spirit and as your guardian angel. Remember you haven’t lost anything, you have gained his life. We all become a part of who we are with in this lifetime, they affect us and they become part of us. We have stories and memories. He is still with all of us, in us.

Nick and Kyky I will always be there for you and the rest of the family, as Spero has been for me, you are family! Nick your dad is so proud of you and told me what a great man you are growing up to become and Kyky he loved you and always mentioned what great mom you are. Be strong, remember all the great memories and cherish them, that is what I will do. I love you as a brother Spero and always will.

There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without but have to let go. Death ends a life, not a relationship. Earth has one angel less, and heaven one more.

Most people believe that we are humans here to have a spiritual experience. I believe we are spirits here having a human experience. We are spirits here passing through having a good a time, until it is time to graduate life and move on to the next.

Enjoy the life after, it is not the end it has only just begun, we will see each other again…

Love Always,

Dear Kyky & Nick,
I am so so so sorry for your loss. We are deeply saddened. Although we lost touch when we moved, You were like family to us when we lived in Jupiter. Jack enjoyed every moment with Spiro..... ...wether they went fishing, played pool, went to a bird show or just hung out. Spiro was larger than life but alway so kind and humble! I can not express my saddness Kyky! I know you have a wonderful close family and know they will be by your side.... but my prayers are with you. Lets keep in touch.

Spero T. - as some people call you.
A person with vibrant personality, kind heart, full of sense of humor...and not to forget-one who loves karaoke and margaritas.
I guess these are just a few of the wonderful things and qualities that most of us will remember about you.
You are so full of life; there was never a dull moment with you!
So many happy memories to remember you by and that is why 'letting go' could take forever.
But like you always tell me, life is too short, and that we should live by the day.
I know, you have definitely lived your life to the fullest.
And I pray to our Lord Almighty and Mother Mary that your soul be in their care.
You have been my best friend, my very best friend...
So long Spero T., I will forever miss you...

Spero, I thought of you like an uncle who meant a lot to me and my parents. No one lived life to the fullest more than you. You've made me realize that life is way too short to live with regrets and put things off till tomorrow. Please watch over all of us because everyone who has been lucky enough to know you, loves you more than words could ever describe. Thank you for coming into our lives. Spero... I am sitting here reading your guestbook, with tears running down my eyes... we are all so proud to have been your cousins. In the seventies, in Astoria, when you would come down from Albany to see us, it was the best "treat" we could have. You were the definition of fun, and we would do all those crazy things together, with the approval (or ignorance!) of our parents. When we moved to Kefalonia, you would always make a point of spending as much time as you could with us. At Lefteri's drinking and doing karaoke... you would always do anything you could to get Maki in a good mood... you were there in 1999 after my accident... you were there in 2005 when we almost lost Doris... you were by our side even from a distance 3 months ago after we lost Maki... you did EVERYTHING you could to help Doris when we were in Jupiter this summer... and yes, the margaritas and karaoke are a trademark for anyone who spent time with you in Jupiter:) You have influenced so many people in your life. I liked the comment a friend of yours posted: God must have needed an Angel to teach his angels to fly. It makes me feel better that you were needed in heaven, so that we will endure missing you on earth... Kyky and Nicholas will always be in good hands, we will all make sure of that... R.I.P. sugar-free, Spero T.

the eternal grin....

I close my eyes, and see you smiling. That familiar smile. Let's go there, anywhere...on rollerblades. Cool electronic device. Let's buy two, one for you and one for me. Hey, drive around on my new lawnmower...it's the Harley of horticulture. Now let's have a margarita and sing Elvis tunes. Tired? Ha! Let's lift weights and go jogging. Let's go to the Keys...they serve good pie down there. I figure we can make it in 5 hours on jetskis. What? You're not tired.

Hey Roy mou! Pali mazi eimaste. Vagel? Let's go...we're going to find Apollo.

Dear Family of Spero,
We have very fond memories of Spero and became acquainted with him when we worked out together at the NYAC during the 1980's. He was one of those rare individuals who was able to be intensely competitive and genuinely friendly. Spero had that rare ability to make friends with everybody. All who knew him are deeply saddened by his untimely passing. We hope that the wonderful memories you have of Spero will sustain you during this time of great grief.
Fondly,

An odd memory of Spero I've always had is that back in School 19 or Hackett Jr. High School we were paired together in the "Presidents Fitness Test". This was well before he was a fitness buff. Kyky, Nick and Family,

We love that man.
We will always love Spero.
We are blessed to have known him.
A true giant.
I haven’t been able to get his big smile out of my head.
Which is not a bad thing.
When the room gets dark, grab a happy thought.
There are so many.
Think of Spero at 3 in the morning feeding a baby bird with an eye dropper.
Looking down at this helpless bird with a big smile on his face.
Always with a smile ... which was infectious.
Spero loves you Kyky and will always love you.
He lives on in Nick.
Spero is with us today.
He will be with us until the end of our days.
Close your eyes, can you see that smile?

We first met in the 80's on a Greco trip to Cuba and we only saw each other occasionally since, but when we did he made me feel like I was the best friend he hadn't seen in ages. My condolences go out to Spero's family and all of his friends in and out of the wrestling world.

I've worked with Spero since 2005 when he was my instructor on the 747-400 at Atlas Air. He was truly a great, great guy. Spero will be missed by all who knew him. His humor and his modesty belied his thorough knowledge of his subject. What a terrible loss to aviation, to his friends, and to the world. We will miss you Spero..

I have many memories of Spero from my early wrestling days and will miss him as many do. Some of the memories include: coaching him at Albany State, being a teammate in national and international competition, getting the last 5 Lbs. off him in the D III's so he'd be an All American, picking up a warm dead deer off I88 in an Albany State van and bringing it to his house... and many more. Spero will be missed by many. My prayers go out to his famly. Mike Paquette

One of the fondest memories I have is of myself and Spero going to Greece to see his relatives. We took a train from Sofia to Athens and a ferry on to Kefalonia. (A Greek island) We had a great ten days and became good friends. Spero was a great guy. ||We lost touch over the years but I still have great photos. My condolences to his wife and son. I was proud of the little boy I saw evolve into one of God's truly beautiful people. Simply, he was a man for all mankind. I was equally as proud to call him my cousin, but even more proud to call him my friend. And now, I'm so thankful I got to tell him not only that, but also how much I loved him.
To Kyky, Nicholas and Silvia, I will be here for you till my last breath is taken.
My deepest condolences on your loss, and to everyone who was touched by Spero's beautiful soul.

Silvia & Family:
Our condolences on the passing of your brother Spero. When one celebrates life and has a passion for flying as he then to do what you loved is a gift. We did not know Spero however as your twin Silvia we did: Caring, loving, passionate and a spiritual belief. Please take care of yourself and your family.
