Eugene Fosburg Obituary

Eugene H. "Gene" Fosburg, 89, of Galesburg, died at 7:12 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Galesburg, to Gustave R. and Elna E. Lindberg Fosburg.
He graduated from Galesburg High School with the Class of 1941 and was employed by Dohrn Transfer Co. in Galesburg as OS&D clerk until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Dec. 10, 1942. He attained the rank of staff sergeant in his military assignment as an Administrative Specialist in HQ of the 435th Troop Carrier Group. He served in the U.S., England, Italy, and France with his unit which was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for dropping U.S. Army paratroops, glider infantry, and vital supplies, on target, behind enemy lines on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was authorized to display seven battle campaign stars on his European Theater ribbon and was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1945.
He married G. Patricia Stephens on Dec. 31, 1950, in Galesburg; she preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1984. Their children are Terry Jean Fosburg-Lytle of Galesburg, and Linda Ann (and Robert) Fosburg Althaus of Camanche, Iowa.
He later married Florence Olson-Hendricks on March 30, 1985, she survives. Other survivors are grandson, Eric J. Lytle; granddaughter, Rebecca L. Lytle; stepsons, Philip C. Hendricks of Galesburg and Stanley K. Hendricks of Kansas City, Mo.; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Barbara J. Hendricks-Singer and Steve Singer of New Canaan, Conn.; and stepgrandsons, Steven M. and James A. Singer. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard.
He attended the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois. He retired in 1989 as Customer Service Manager for Dick Blick Co. in Galesburg. Immediately after retirement he sought out the living members of his WWII unit, arranged annual reunions for them at many different sites in the U.S., and regularly wrote and mailed newsletters to the pi. The annual reunions ended in 2006, and he continued the newsletters until February 2011.
He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years.
Prior to working for Dick Blick Co., he had several other job assignments. He sold insurance for Guarantee Mutual Life Ins. Co., The Prudential Insurance Co., State Farm Mutual Ins. Co., and Aetna Life & Casualty Co. He was also a property Insurance Claim Adjuster for Western Adjustment & Inspection Co., and spent several years in the household goods moving and storage business as Manager of Ferris-Mayflower of Galesburg and Account Salesman for Kreigsman-Mayflower of Pekin.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg since 1938. He spent many years as a member and four-time President of the civic club Cosmopolitan International. He was a member of Barbershop quartet singers. He was an 8-gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross, and enjoyed watching sports events and playing golf and bowling.
Gene's greatest satisfaction in life was finding his WWII Army buddies that were still alive. He was shown how to connect with them and never stopped looking. Reunions were held for over 20 years, meeting in cities all over the US.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, in Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Galesburg Rescue Mission or Knox County Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Gene, your enthusiasm has always been one of your greatest assists. As the first female member of the Galesburg Cosmopolitan Service club, I was always impressed with your kindness, and your innate ability to help others. More recently, during my health crisis you encouraged me in the rehab arena. I remember thinking you would forever be young. When seeing your passing, I did not feel it could be possible. God has blessed me through out the years by having given me such a wonderful friend. Your smile, your enthusiasm to help others and your respectful personality is a legacy that will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace my friend.
God bless your family during this time.
