Michael Schlender, "Applegate Mike" as most people know him, passed away on December 5, 2013 at the age of 69, after a long hard fight with leukemia. He was born in Los Angeles and moved to Applegate in 1976. Mike was well known as the owner of the "Applegate Garage" and was the type of guy you always remembered and proud to know! He had the ability to see people for who they were and made them feel special in their own way. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, helping others, rolling the dice, playing cards, summers on the water and fishing. Mike was well loved, called grandpa by some and a great friend by so many others. Mike lived life to the fullest, "the Extreme", and helped so many in different ways! He will be greatly missed by all that have known him.
He leaves behind his daughter, Laura Suddjian and her husband, Steve; grandsons; Ryan and Tyler; son, Tommy Schlender and his wife, Tracy; granddaughter, Ashleigh; son, John Schlender; granddaughter, Megan; brother, Patrick Schlender and his wife, Jacqueline; brother, Thomas and his wife, Shelly; nephews: Ty, Tracy, Shane, Kelly and Riley; and all the others who he has deeply touched. As he would say "Bop Bop Mow Mow" if you're going to do something stupid make sure it's funny! Mike will be greatly missed and was one of a kind!
Service will be held at Lassila's Funeral Chapels December 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. 551 Grass Valley Hwy, Auburn CA 95603 (530) 885-6271 "Casual attire welcome"

Mike. I just found out today that I lost a good friend..YOU! I knew you were sick, just never expected you to leave us. You were a Maverick, a special friend always there for me so many times I can't count bailing me out of another busted up truck. The Ambulance of mine was your pride and joy project. Never forget you my friend. Your warmth will fill my heart forever. I promise to pass on the practice of helping the helpless. Love Kent Rogne

Mike was a life saver and great friend for me and my two boys(young men now)...I was alone with 2 babies, forced to stay at Applegate Motel, when I woke up the first morning there, I was going to go and get assistance in town and my car wouldn't start...Mike came over and tried to help me for no charge. He ended up not being able to fix it due to the new computer stuff involved, but he found someone to help me and he and I became great friends. I will never forget going out one New Year's Eve in Auburn, ran into Mike and he asked me to dance, at the end he lifted me up into the air, well I'm tall and the ceilings were low. As he lifted me I put my arms up into the air and went right up into the ceiling panels from like my waste up...We all laughed so hard and from that point every time we saw each other I'd say "Wanna Dance" LOL. He always made me feel special, as I would come in once in awhile to get him to do advertising and his worker would say "We aren't buying anything today" and Mike would come out and say "What are you selling me today" I feel I owe part of my ability to continue on as a single Mom, and being successful, due to Mike... his kindness, friendship and laughter... Thank you for the memories, Mike!

Mike truly was someone you would never forget once you met him. I used to wait on him at Giovanni's and he always had a smile and a laugh for whoever he was with. He was one of the good ones. Laura, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a father, and just before Christmas, too. Time will help, cherish the memories, and know that he is watching over you still.

You were the best "Boss" Ever! 14 years just doesn't seem long enough time to get to know someone, until you work with them. Mike was old school like i was, when it came to repairing Automobiles. He was even better when it came to people.I learned alot from you "Boss". Thank You for everything......

Mike, we first met when you drove a tow truck for Deyoung's Towing in Canoga Park,Ca.in the 60's. You used to tow for our automotive shop {Jay Ward's}. We knew a lot of the same people growing up in the San Fernando Valley. Lost touch with you until I happened to move to Auburn in the early 90's and bumped into you in Old Town Auburn. What a small world.Hope to bump into you again in the next. I couldn't ask for a better friend. So until that time "Long may you run".

Mike I'm so sorry I was not there to wish you off on a beautiful Trip. It surely is not like the ones we took. I'm in Thailand with the wife. You have left me with so many good and happy memories. The stories I could tell as many others can. You were the maverick I wish I could have been and the best friend one could have. I love you man. Until we meet save me a seat. I want to sit at your table.

Laura and all extended family. We've known Mike for over thirty wonderful years. Kids growing up together, adults growing up together. Never a dull moment in our life time with Mike. He only made friends, and no enemies. Loved and trusted by all. Will be missed but never forgotten. Cherish you memories as we will. In our hearts forever.

I met Applegate Mike through the Tahoe Club. I found him to be a very likable guy who always had a smile on his face and was kind to me unless he took all my money during our poker games at the club. I will miss him and all the fun we had.

We first met Mike when we took our vehicles to his garage. We trusted him immediately and for the next 30+ years. We enjoyed the "social" times also. We considered him a friend and think he felt the same way.
