Hi Jay,
We heard about the wonderful tribute - the renaming of a bridge for you - just goes to show how much you are loved! You deserve it Jay!
Your Dad was so proud but at the same time sad when he found out that Adkins was not put on the sign - he was told that your name Adkins would not fit - "It makes me sad" he said "but more for Jay - that was his name".
I'm just so glad you and Shad got to really talk and say things that you both had been wanting to say for years. It would have been so hard for you both trying to get to know one another living so far apart - he hated it so much, but knew that your Mum loved you and would always take good care of you. I really hope you know just how much he wanted you here Jay. You were his boy and he loved you!
In one of your last letters to your Grandma Kathern you said that you were so looking forward to "being part of your little brothers lives, and everyone else's of course" - you told of how you "bragged about your Dad being a great Bronc Rider and how you thought of his achievements" and "even though I haven't always been around, if I didn't have you guys I would never have the spirit I have" you told her.
We think of you always Jay! We miss you always Jay! We love you always Jay!

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.

Dear Jay-D,
It is almost the anniversary of the day you left us a year ago, and I just popped in to tell you how much I love you and miss you and that it was such a miracle and I am so grateful to have had you in our lives, even if for only a short while.
I gave your brothers, Todd and Matt, your car collection, that I had been collecting for you since you were little. Everytime I would go to shopping centres I would look in the Collectors Store at cars.
Shad, Sandy, Todd, Matt, Grandpa Dick and I looked through the collection that was all in their original boxes. They will take good care of them. Sandy got a glass case to display them in. Todd and Matt gave each of their cousins, (Chrystal, Jake, Dylan, Martin, Brent and Ryan Adkins) one of the cars in Memory of you, their brother, Jay-D.
It was sad for me when I went home and the space was empty, where I had saved them all these years.
We are getting on with our lives. even though they have been changed forever. I have found new dimentions since you left the bounds of this earth.
You are in my heart forever
Talk to you later
All my love

Dear Jay-D
It has already been a year, which always moves to quickly, although I don’t think there’s been a day when you have not been in our thoughts.
I remember when we were little; you would watch over me and be the very best cousin anyone could ask for. Even though you were a kid yourself, you always shared your toys with me, the ornery 1 year old :) ill always appreciate that. Thank you for keeping me company when I was growing up too, you’re a great pen pal and always had something interesting to tell me, and told me of America and Disney Land and great places like that :) and as you are a little older than me, helped me through the challenges of growing up and school as you had already experienced the early teen stuff your self.
I hope in some way this may have kept you occupied too.
Thank you for letting me win the running race in 1998 when you came to Australia to visit, being the only grandaughter in a mix of boy cousins, it was nice to win for a change :)
I really just want to show you how much I appreciate everything you did, and the effect you had on everyone around you. Some of my earliest memories of childhood involved you, and they will stay with me forever…as you will stay, for ever in my heart.
Love you Jay

Hey Jay Bird
Well it is nearly a year since that horrendous day,it still feels like yesterday when I got that dreaded phone call from Dave I will never forget that for as long as I live. It is even sadder now that we have had time to think about what we are missing by you not being here.I wish I could be closer to the US for your mum,Kerrie,Ash, Jord & Morgan but I can honestly say that you & them are always in my thoughts & will be for ever in our hearts.
Darrell can't look at the CD's of the service but I know he thinks about you often & is extremely proud of you he always comments on what a tuff nut you were. Poss loves & misses you she always reflects on her time over there with you Jord & Ash & how great it was that you took her to the movies with you & your mates. Dale is sad that he never got to do the big boy stuff with you & that you could meet Bec. Jay I could go on for ever about what we miss but now we reflect on what we have & I would not trade those memories for the world. Jay I love you & miss you ,all I can promise is that we will all look after one another.

Hey Jay,
It has been so long since I wrote, I think of you daily. It was especially difficult during March when we reached the one year since we were all together, here at my house - celebrating Jordy's 16th birthday and Morgan's 18th birthday together - it was you, Ashley, Robyn, Shad, Jordy and Morgan. We hugged good bye and you said "I'll see you in a year", we said I love you and I told you how proud I was of of you. It was March 9th when you deployed to Iraq, 16 years to the day when you and Robyn arrived here in the USA. I woke up one night with that on my mind, the date seemed so meaningful, March 9th - Jordy's birthday, your arrival with Robyn at 5 years old to our home here in the US, 16 years later to the day deployed to the Middle East. You left America the same date that you arrived. That day in March of '08 was very sad for me, it represented so many things. Some good and one very bad, the last day we communicated before your deployment. April 28th is coming up soon Bud, the worst day of my life. I will never forget Robyn's phone call, thank God Jordy and I were together that day, the horror of what had happened, our worst fears came true, how could this happen to us, to you. We miss you so much, and have great love for you always. I visited you at Easter, by myself this time. It was peaceful and calming. I left you some Easter eggs, three of them, one from Jordy and I, one from Debbie, Darrly, Dannielle and Dale, and one from Granma Marcia and Grandpa Bill. I left them with an Easter Lily. Robyn visited you later in the day and ate the Easter eggs. She said it was pay back for all the time you raided her stash of chocolate. I laughed when she told me that - it seemed proper. How I miss you, Jordy has a boyfriend she would love you to meet. I think you would approve. His name is Cody, he is very good to Jordy - I think you would like him. He is kind of a punk in some ways just like you. You would get along with him. Morgan is amazingly strong as always, Ashley is coping and we take special care of her. Robyn is fighting a good fight to stay strong but it is hard. You know me, I appear strong on the outside and suffer silently on the inside. I really miss seeing you. I am taking care of your truck, I really need to drive it more but it is hard. I may drive it to Ione on the 28th if I have the courage. I am not as brave as I appear. I hope you hear my silent prayers and know that I never go to sleep at night or wake up without sending you a special hello. I walk into the shed where your truck is and always say "Hi Jay". Please watch over all of us next week while we grieve the one year anniversary of our loss, please send us comfort while we grieve, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, sister, Ashley and Robyn, Shad, Sandy, Matt and Todd. We love you Jay and will never forget you.
Please send me a sign that you know we are here for you and that you are forever in our hearts. Lots of love always, Kerrie and Jordy. xoxoxoxo

It did my heart good when your Dad said he saw you and Great Grandpa bantering back and forth with ease and laughing. Guess you will be hearing all those jokes and one liners too.(ha)
I love you, Our Guardian Angel

I didn't know you, young man. I knew many like you; and served my time in Iraq like you, but I came home and you didn't. I never questioned the validity or legitimacy of this war. I doubt you did either. Soldiers like us just did what we had to do, what we were trained to do. My condolences to the family on your loss. God willing no more...

Hi Jay, just want to check in to say how much we miss you and feel your presence on a daily basis. Yesterday was a good day, Jordy and I went to Ione to visit with your Mum and catch up with her and your friends. We laughed, told stories about you, and missed you dearly. We visited your gravesite and laughed, we freshened the flowers and toasted to you - "Cheers". We talked about how we feel you around us daily, everytime Jordy tries to play "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd in her truck (on her I-Pod) it has static, it is only when she is driving. She can play it clearly when she is not driving - we figured that is your way of not letting her get distracted from her driving while she is listening to that song. Her Dad told her that "Jay doesn't want you crying while you should be concentrating on driving", I think he is right. Each time I fly, which is at least once or twice a week now, I see your face in the clouds in the beautiful early morning sky. I quietly visit with you, I have now gotten to look forward to those visits and make a normally mundane business trip something of comfort. When we were visiting and laughing at your gravesite yesterday, the mood was broken up by the sprinklers suddenly coming on. We decided that was your way of joining us and as usual bringing something to the conversation that we didn't count on. Robyn and Ashley have had at least two occassions at the gravesite where they locked themselves out of their vehicles, Ash had to climb in the back window of your truck to get in. You would have laughed at that site... I just want you to know that we feel your strength, humor and protectiveness on a daily basis. We cherish it and look forward to our visits. Keep watching over us, we love having your spirit around. I will be in Oregon the week after next for a horse show, wish me luck - I'll be thinking of you. Many of my friends wear your caps in honor of you and your fellow soldiers. It makes me very proud to be riding around at the show and see random people wearing them. You have touched many people in a special way, I look forward to our visits. Take care, lots of love from Kerrie and Jordy. We miss you and love you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Jay, my big brother, the greatest brother in the whole word, I miss you! Every day, I think about the times we had together. The good and the bad. The times when I would call you to come pick me up in the middle of the night, and you would be right there. And the times, when you were not happy until I was on the ground screaming. ahh, how I miss those times brother. I love you so much. I know you are with me every second of every day. and I cherish that. Nothing would be better than to see your beautiful face again. But that time will come, soon enough. Life on earth is so short, but eternity is forever, and now I have that to look forward to. I love you brother. more than words can explain. I hope your up there watchin us with everything you have. keepin all of us safe! I love you Jay! Til, we meet again...I can't wait!! I love you!

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Father we entrust our brother Jay-D to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Jay-D in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

To everyone who has signed this guest book:
Your kindness for us and your love for Jay is overwhelming. As we try daily to move through this healing process and honor Jay's life, we are all struck by the expressions of love, pride and support everyone has shared with us. Jay touched so many people over two continents, as well as his Army friends and their families. He was not the type of kid that sought out attention for himself and I know he is observing this from above and so touched by everyone's love for him. I know he would not have expected this. I will continue to read the entries and respond to whoever would like to be responded to. We all loved our Jay and he will never be forgotten.
Lots of love to you all,
Proud Aunt Kerrie and cousin Jordy. Wilton, California
