Sidney Nagel Obituary

Sidney Nagel

U.S.A.F Ret'd

Mr. Sidney (Sid) Nagel, November 15, 1924 - May 7, 2012 resident of Shreveport, La. passed away peacefully at his home following a lengthy illness with his wife at his side.

Sid was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, becoming a graduate of Heron Aviation High School.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946. Upon the completion of this duty, he returned to Brooklyn, and was employed for a suit manufacturing company. His love of the military compelled him to re-enlist in the United States Air Force, continuing his career as an in-flight refueling specialist and completing two years of college. His tour included World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Sid retired at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana in 1966 and remained in the area to be near his children. He was a credit to the uniform he wore.

As a member of the Masonic Lodge he became a 32nd degree Mason, was a member of the Shreveport Contractor's Union Local 764 and an avid Ham Radio Operator under the call letters W5NTC. Sid obtained his pilot's license and accumulated many hours in twin engine airplanes, he loved to fly! A local business owner of AAA Printing Company, he was well known throughout the community. Sid loved the joy of dancing and the big band era. He maintained his trademark sense of humor until the end. He has now been reunited with his best friend of 62 years, Walt Boteler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kalman Louis Nagel, and Rachel Per of Brooklyn, NY, originally from Vilna, Russia; two brothers, David Nagel of New York and Abraham Nagel of Florida, one sister, Frances Gurian of New York, his grandson, Jeremy Colin Nagel of Bossier City, LA. and great granddaughter, Harper Paige Niles of Raeford, NC.

Those left to cherish his memory, his wife of 41 years, Rose Elaine Monroe Nagel, his children, Ronda Nagel Gaudet-Arden, Bossier City, Richard Keith Nagel and wife Dena, Hartsell, Alabama; Russell Kent Nagel, Sr. and wife, Wendylee, Clearfield, Utah; Darin Lee Nagel, Shreveport; Tami Burchette, Thousand Oaks, CA. and Terry Allen (Bud) Burchette, Shreveport. His brother, Irving Nagel of Florida, fifteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, May 11, Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Avenue, Shreveport, La. 5P.M.-7 P.M. Services, Saturday, May 12, 10 A.M.

Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery East, St. Vincent Avenue, immediately following services. His son's, Rusty Nagel, Darin Nagel, Bud Burchette and grandson's, Richard K. Nagel Jr., Dalton Nagel, Kent Nagel, Keith Gaudet, and Johnny Knop will serve as pall bearers.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Sid Nagel our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Sid. And to Sid it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars while serving first in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then in the U.S. Air Force. Sid, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Sid's family and loved ones.
