Robert Reeves Obituary

Robert James

Reeves

SHREVEPORT, LA - Robert James Reeves, born August 2, 1979, was killed in action on August 5, 2011 fighting for his country as a United States Navy SEAL. Smart, funny, honorable, loyal, kind and generous, Rob was truly a special force in our lives. We are heartbroken to lose him too soon.

Rob will be remembered as a big-hearted son, brother, friend and teammate who would do anything to support those close to him. His steadfast loyalty sent him to the sides of family members and friends at a moment's notice, regardless of his own priorities. He was a rock of support and could always diffuse a tense situation, usually dissolving a somber room into one full of laughter. Rob's quick wit, humor and sarcasm will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of laughing, usually at their own expenses, courtesy of Rob.

Rob had a quiet humility that kept him from touting his many achievements and talents (although his proud father usually made up for this). He approached every challenge in life with intense curiosity and an astounding determination to master his next chosen task, which he inevitably did. He had an insatiable appetite for learning new things, gaining the most of all life's offerings and a genuine interest in making things better. His itch to experience life and continue learning took him around the world learning languages, mountain climbing, starting businesses, base jumping, negotiating, motorcycling, teaching, and flying. And these are just a few of his recent adventures.

For 13 years Rob served admirably in the United States Navy. He served tours of duty all across the world and among his many military commendations he was the recipient of four Bronze Stars. A dedicated soldier, he pursued his life's work with passion and pride, and he shared that pride with his beloved teammates, family and friends.

Rob is preceded in death by his mother, Jo Sheryn Batliner Reeves, his grandfathers, Robert Vincent Batliner and James Otis Reeves, and his cousin Samuel Wyatt Stoothoff. He is survived by his father, James Weldon Reeves, his sister, Emily Reeves, and his grandmothers, Francis Stallcup Reeves and Jo Nell Batliner.

A memorial service will be held in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 13, 2011 at 11 AM in St. Mark's Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) or the Navy SEAL Foundation (http://www.nswfoundation.org/) to support the families of Rob's fallen teammates and the Navy SEAL communities.

Every Memorial Day , I take the time to read a story about a fallen hero. There is always a poignant and moving story in the paper, a magazine , or social media. Some are recent and some are decades in the past. Their sacrifice and honor make our throats tight and our eyes tear. Such loss . Such grief and real pain. We hold close in our thoughts and heart Robert, and all those who loved him.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Reeves Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Robert visited our American Legion Post in Hebron, CT this past Memorial Day. The Post members are very proud that he graced us however briefly with his presence. We have a picture of him on our wall. While I did not enjoy the honor or actually meeting Robert, those who did stand a little taller for the experience even though they knew him only a very little. Robert is in our thoughts and prayers.

May God Bless you and keep you in His loving arms. I am so sorry for your loss, there are no words that are adequate. I did not know your loved one; and yet he gave his life for me ~ and all Americans...that we may be free to worship, and live in a country that God has blessed for this reason. So many people suffer from lives that seem futile, and fruitless. So many live long lives without seeing the world, and having adventures and many friends. I know beyond a doubt that your loved one was blessed in this world; and that his greatest rewards are in Heaven. Thank you for your sacrifice as a family. God Bless You and Yours.

Dear Jim, You may not remember me but we worked together at Chase on the 4th floor. you were in mortgage and I was with Chase Investment services. You would come over to our "side" and we all would visit. After 911 we talked about your son the seal and how much he loved his work. I thought of you immediately when I heard two seals were killed from Shreveport, I prayed that he was not one of them. Well the rest is history. Jim I know you are proud and I know you hurt. We prayed for Robert yesterday at St. Joseph's Church. I will be sending a memorial in his honor to the Seals foundation as mentioned in the paper. Take Care.

To Rob's family...After reading the story of how Rob & his friend joined the Navy together and became SEALs I wanted to express my sincere heartfelt feelings to you. I too was a Navy SEAL from 1967-1970 with 3 tours in Viet Nam. I joined the Navy with my best friend and we both became SEALS and we are both originally from Louisiana (Alexandria). I lost many friends in Viet Nam who were gallant warriors like your son was. We lost 5 in a helicopter crash the last day on my third and last tour. Having never met Rob I can honestly say I feel as though he is a kinship. To lose young men like this is overwhelming but I assure you he was doing what he loved best. I have had all the families in my prayers since this horrific event and will continue to pray for peace and understanding for your family as well as all the others. If you would ever want to contact me you are welcome to do so at [email protected]

I will be on my way to Coronado this week for the annual SEAL team reunion and this Thursday evening there will be a Viet Nam SEAL reunion where we will have a memorial for those great SEAL warriors that were lost on this operation.

My God watch over all of your family and bless each and every one of you.

My sincerest thoughts for you all,

IN HIM,

I was very saddened by the loss of our servicemen, especially the SEALS, but devastated when I learned that Rob was the son of a Navy shipmate of mine. I served with Jim (Boomer) on the Enterprise back in the 60's and we were close friends. It seems that Rob had the same personality as his father. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep Rob and his family in my thoughts and prayers. My deepest condolences to Jim and your family.

Although words cannot begin to adequately express my sympathy for your loss, do know that my heart and prayers go out to the family of CPO Robert James Reeves and all of the other military families that have lost love ones in our current military conflicts. My first husband is still MIA in Vietnam and my oldest son was KIA in the first Gulf War. Although the feelings of sorrow will never diminish, do realize the wonderful memories of the times you had with him will gradually ease the pain of your loss. It won’t be easy, and there will be times you will find yourself crying, but you will survive and things will get better and eventually return to nearly normal. And always remember, the best way to honor his sacrifice is for each of you to live your lives to the fullest; for I’m certain he would have wanted nothing less.

I just read another post saying hundreds of people in his hometown showed up for the memorial service. This is so wonderful; the men that served in Vietnam didn’t get this recognition. I also want to commend and thank the citizens of Shreveport who took the time to honor their fallen hero with their presence. I know this must have meant a lot to his family.

Dear God, please bless CPO Reeves’ entire family and provide them with all of the strength they will need to endure this terrible burden and to be able to continue living the happy and productive lives he would have wanted them to enjoy. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I never knew Robert but we have many mutual friends. I knew Jonas and his family and understand they were friends. I would have been there today but am in Florida on a long planned family vacation. We have thought and prayed for your family every day. I have told my four children about what happened and shed our tears into the ocean for our brave fellow Shreveporter. My children have asked many questions about sacrifice and sorrow that are mature beyond their years. We have thought of Robert Jonas and the others every day. I told them like so many of our family and friends they risked all so might have this great nation. Our family will always remember and honor Roberts sacrifice. I can not imagine the loss of one of my children but only hope you all can continue to derive joy from life as I am sure Robert would have wanted you to. My young sons want to serve one day and will put my fear aside because this place is worth fighting for. My heart goes out to you and only hope that this nation can live up to Roberts sacrifice.

I’m a DAV from ‘Nam and the father of a fallen soldier in Desert Storm, so I understand the pain being felt by the family of CPO Robert James Reeves and extend my sincere condolences to those he left behind. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, and will be hailed a hero by the citizens of this country for as long as there is a United States of America. Although I never had the honor of meeting CPO Reeves, I proudly extend a salute to this brave man. Thank you, my brother, for making the ultimate sacrifice while so proudly serving and defending our country, now RIP.

Also, I read that hundreds of people around and in his hometown have turned out to honor this man, so I want to thank the citizens of the Shreveport area for recognizing the sacrifice made by this man. Our fallen heroes deserve no less.
