WINKHOUSE, George Robert 85, passed away December 08, 2010. He was born May 13, 1925 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of William and Mary Winkhouse. George attended Springfield High School, graduating in 1944. While at Springfield High, George played football, basketball and baseball. He was elected team captain and MVP of the 1943 football team. He was a member of the only Springfield High School baseball team to play for the state championship, and he received All-Ohio honors in football his senior year. He participated in Golden Glove Boxing as well. After graduating at mid-term, George served in the navy aboard the destroyer, the USS Bush, during the invasion of Okinawa. His ship was hit by three kamikaze planes and was sunk. George was one of 200 men out of the 450 aboard the ship to be rescued after spending over nine hours floating in the sea. Following his military service, George enrolled at Wittenberg University. While at Wittenberg, George married his college sweetheart Jean Flanagan in 1949. He lettered all four years in both football and baseball serving as team captain in each sport his senior year and earning All-Ohio and All-Conference honors. After obtaining his masters degree at Xavier University, George resigned his teaching and coaching positions in the late 70s when he was appointed as assistant principal at Fairborn High School. He returned in July 1992. At the time of his retirement, the Fairborn Board of Education honored him for his 42 years of dedicated service. After retirement, George served as assistant baseball coach at Wittenberg for 5 years. George remains the coach of the longest duration in the Fairborn school district. George was inducted into the Springfield-Clark County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, the Miami Valley Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995, the Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Honor in 2002, and the Springfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He will be inducted into the Fairborn Board of Education Hall of Fame in April. George was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Not sure what to say?

So many memories to choose from today...but one that comes to mind this morning was a baseball game late in the season at Troy in 1971. Troy was always a good team and a tough opponent. Their catcher was a guy named Randy Walker...who we also faced on the football field...who went on to college at Miami and later became the head football coach at Northwestern. On this day with Randy catching, I managed to hit a home run that got out of the park pretty quickly and very high. I remember that when the ball left the bat Randy said "WOW" as I headed toward 1st base. Feeling pretty good, when I rounded 3rd and saw Wink...he simply said "its about time Hall!" These were the times I loved the most with Wink...always kept it real with a great sense of humor. With all of the memories we have in our lives...some of my most fond memories are the ones I remember with Mr. Winkhouse...

Spent many Saturday afternoons sitting behind George at Wittenberg football games during my sons college years. Jean Winkshouse was also my sons favorite teacher. So sorry for your loss.

I shared six years with George at Baker as a teacher and coach. I always remember him for that perpetual twinkle in his eye and great sense of humor. He may have been the most "laid back" football coach I was ever around. He had a routine of taking a nap on Friday afternoons before games in his office. Many a time one of his assistants would have to wake him to get ready for the game.
Wink was a class act, a friend to everyone, and a joy to be around.
My prayers and thoughts to his family and friends.

I will never forget Coach Winkhouse. I was lucky enough to have played football and baseball for Coach Wink. He instilled in me the drive to be the best I could be. His taught me the lessons of hard work and dedication that are with me today. I have tried to pattern my life like Wink's. I am a Retire U.S. Navy Veteran, and now a high school teacher and coach. If I can be half as good as Wink I will be very happy. I will miss you Coach, you have done so much for the athletes of Fairborn High and Fairborn Baker. You were a great coach and a great man. It is with a sad heart that I say good bye Coach.. Get the team ready up there, someday I hope to play for you again. Until we meet again, RIP. Class of 1972.

Coach was truly an inspiring person. He would always be fair and compassionate regardless of the situation that would place you in his presence. He was a man to be respected and in turn he would show respect. He was a great teacher to the young mind and a leader in which one would want to follow.
Our prayers are with the family..R.I.P. Coach

Wink always handled me firm but fare. He was always there for me when I needed him and would always put things aside to help me get through that day. How can you repay someone who gives you principles how you should live your life that makes you what you have become today. I hope I can make Coach proud and teach my kids half as much as he taught me. Thanks Coach..

My thoughts and prayers are with the both of you and the rest of the family as you move forward. Good luck and Pa will surely be missed by many.

Coach Winkhouse A Teacher, in gym class, football or baseball. He was a mentor to all. Few people in life, leave a lasting memory you will never forget. Ellen and family,
I am sorry to hear of your father's passing. I had the distinct pleasure and honor of working with Mr. Winkhouse for 26 years at FHS. He was a man of calm integrity and ruled with an iron hand and gentle heart. When he would knock on the door of a classroom hearts would pound with the realization that someone was on the hot seat. Either talked to outside the door or taken to his office, the violater of a rule was given a consequence for his or her lack of judgement. Along with the consequence came words of wisdom on being a worthwhile citizen of FHS and the community. George Winkhouse was concerned about the whole person for which he was responsible. He gave them the role model for integrity, honesty, and dependabitly. He extended this not only to the students but also to his follow educators. The world is a better place because of George Winkhouse.

If there was a spot in the dictionary for "straight shooter", George's picture would be there! He was one of the most blatantly honest people I was ever fortunate enough to know. He called 'em like he saw 'em!
I coached against George in baseball, and was with him in the Miami Valley baseball coaches Hall of Fame. He was one of the best basketball officials when I coached basketball. We would run into George in Daytona quite often at the LaPlaya Hotel, right across from the Bel Aire Shopping Center.
George had so much character, as did some neat people from Fairborn, like the Cliftons, the Stephensons, the Crosses, the Gearharts, and others. We were pretty envious in Xenia!
It was my pleasure to know George.

To the Family of George Winkhouse:
Truly a memorable person of character in my life. He was the picture of dedication as a teacher and Coach. You could see the twinkle in his eye as he reprimanded you in gym class or encouraged you to hit his curveball in batting practice. He was always engaged with his students and athletes. He will be missed and his memory cherished.

I often think about how lucky we were at FHS (1955) to have had educators like Wink. I will say that at 73 and not having seen George for over 50 years I have a tear in my eye as I write this. He was such a great guy and so much fun to be around.

Rest in Peace, Wink, you have served well.

Wink was a taskmaster, but had a real heart. I recall in gym once when i was trying to climb that impossible rope and being 300+ pounder, I just couldn't get 3' off the floor... Wink came over and said, "Waters, get yur fat butt up there." I replied, I'm trying but can't. He stepped on the bottom of the rope and made it tight, and said, "Try it again." I was able to get about 6 or 7' before I tuckered out.
Thanks Mr. Winkhouse for the assist. You made me a better man by that act of kindness.

Ellen and Marisa, you were truly blest to have such a special man to guide you both through the years. I got to know Pa really well during your hospital stays Ellen, and he was so kind, loving, funny and so very interesting to talk with. My life is richer and I know more blessed because of your dad. Thank you both for sharing. I love you both and you are in my prayers.

Uncle George was one of the finest men I ever knew. Like my deceased father (George's half brother, Bud Crawford) he was a member of the greatest generation and he exhibited a dignity that commanded respect. Uncle George would always drop by during the holidays to spend time with my family including grandma (his mother). I have always been proud of Uncle George and knowing his exploits on the athletic fields of Wittenberg helped inspire me to play sports at a very early age. My deepest sympathies go out to the rest of the family and Uncle George's friends. There are few heroes left from his era and the world has lost a fine gentleman and hero in Uncle George.

I'm going to miss George and his dry sense of humor at our Springfield-Clark County Baseball Hall of Fame board meetings. Someone would make a joke about George, he'd smile and fire a great zinger right back at them.

I'm going to miss George as a friend, mentor and fellow Wittenberg sports fan. He's been a friend to our family for many years. He wasn't one to talk just to hear the sound of his own voice, but when he did have something to say, it was always insightful and worth hearing.

I began my teaching career in 1972 at Fairborn Baker where George was a PE teacher at the time. He was a very peaceful person, friendly and kind. I remember him more when he became an assistant principal, and what I remember the most is how supportive he was of the teaching staff. No matter what the problem was, whether it was with a particular student or some other issue, he always was very supportive of me.

George being reserved could surprise you when he performed in public. One time I remember as many teachers and one class of seniors will was when he played the part of the Native American member of the Village People group in a skit we did for the graduating seniors. He, Gerry Derge, myself, and a student teacher played our parts as Village People members singing and dancing to one of their songs, a performance which has been talked about forever. But the person everyone remembers the most that day was George because it was so unexpected and he was so good.

George was so good at everything he did and so good to everyone and he'll always be remembered for that.

My first memories of George was while I was playing Little League Baseball and he was an umpire. I later had the privilege of coahing Babe Ruth Baseball as an opposing manager. Regardless of which team won or lost, they were always great games because the players, coaches, and managers respected one another. When new players would meet George for the first time I would tell them to pay attention to him because he has forgotten more about baseball than many of us willl ever know. I always enjoyed sitting around the old Municipal Stadium and listening to George and Bill tell baseball stories. George was a tremendous man and an asset to our community.

How comforting it is for me to read all of these wonderful things about my grandpa. All of these shared memories serve as evidence of the enormous impact Pa made on everyone that was lucky enough to have him in their lives. I appreciate all of these comments, especially the one that says "the world is the loser today." How true that is. He was the greatest grandpa anyone could ever imagine, and he has been my hero since I knew the meaning of the word. I am so proud and blessed to have been his little Rissy, and I will miss him more than words can say every day of my life. Love you, Pa!

Coach Winkhouse was one of the most exquisite blends of toughness, humor and a kind heart I have known. Those of us who played baseball for him in the mid-1960's remember that he drove the bus, hit infield, defended us on questionable calls, then, at the end, gathered all the bats and equipment and stuffed them into this huge canvas bag and threw it (north of 150 pounds) over his shoulder like it was a sack of potatoes. I appreciated him then as an exceptional coach and man. My feelings only deepened over the years.

Wink was the assistant principal at Baker when I started my teaching career. He was a friend and later a mentor as I decided to enter administration. I remember early in the summer of my first principal's job in Springfield. There was a commotion in the office and a gruff voice demanded to see the principal. Wink's lovely granddaughter was a student there at Catholic Central and he came to wish me well. I saw George so many times during the years that Marissa was a student there-- the most loving and supportive grandfather ever. We'll miss you, Wink

December 9, 2010

To this new high schooler in town(in 1962),"Wink " was a reassuring figure, and a terrific coach. We kids knew his gruffness meant he was paying attention, and he cared. We've lost a fine man, respected by all. -Frank Bordonaro, Wink's "lefthander", New Canaan, CT.

Wink was a coach when Don (66) and I (72) were in HS and then we returned as teachers. He always had a smile and wink(no pun intended) for me and was a pleasure to work with via Band and Flyerettes. He was a joyous man with a wry sense of humor, and we were so honored and pleased that he came to our wedding and Don's bachelor party.
The hallowed halls of FHS will never be quite the same. Wink had a way of making you feel good about yourself. Wink, you were a gem!

I have known George since I was a small child in the early 1950's when he played softball for my father, Ed Todd. I grew up in Fairborn and had the pleasure of seeing him on a regular basis at my parents' home and while in high school. He coached baseball and also coached my husband Melvin Shearer in football. He was a great teacher and coach and also a class act. I think everyone felt that way about him. I posted two of his pictures while he coached. I also spoke with him many times when I became employed with Fairborn City Schools until he retired. My husband and I used to go to Cliff Park with our grandkids in the summer and always saw him there. We had many a fun conversation with him and he will most surely be missed! God Bless him!

George Winkhouse was one of the first people I taught with in Fairborn in 1970. What a great baseball coach. There were 5 of us who brought in lunch on football Fridays when he was the head coach---- the superstition--- and we about went broke when the Flyers started off with 5 or 6 wins in a row that year. Ellen:

I have so many ways to remember your father it's hard to find the first place. He was the "Coach" when I was in school; but when I married his co-worker, somehow that morphed to "George". I spent many a fun time at faculty events with him and in his retirement years, we enjoyed visiting him at the Springfield Arts Festival almost each year. But the way I want to remember him is in 1980 when my husband Jerry, George and other teachers were the "Village People" for the Faculty "Talent" Show. George was the Native American, and he came on stage last, wearing only a pair of shorts and a huge headdress! The place went berserk! I have never seen anything like that before or since. It was absolutely great and in all the years previous or since, that is how I want to remember him!!! God bless you during this difficult time, but remember how good a life he had and how many people just loved him to pieces!
