I met Mort when I started my first job at Retail Jewelers of America in West Orange. He was the Director for the trade shows but kept involved in his business in Union, NJ - where I got my engagement ring and wedding set! He had lots of good fatherly advice for me, but also supported my work at RJA. His influence is part of who I am today.

Dorothy and Nancy: I met Mort when I was about 23 years old and working for the Zale Corporation. He was kind and gentle to a young know-it-all, and treated me with respect. He taught me some about jewelry, and a lot about how to treat vendors. I'm lucky to have known him, and sorry for your loss.

Mort was a true gentleman. He took me under his wing in the 70's when we worked for Zales. His knowledge of the jewelry industry and his willingness to teach me will never be forgotten. I feel privileged to have know him. My condolences to his family.

Mort,
You and your family will never know all the lives you touched in a positive way. You gave me a big break in the industry and I appreciate everything you have done for me. It has been many years since we talked as I was only 23 years old at the time. You not only launched the careers of many designers but you help design many lives. I was honored to know you.

Mort had a vision that ultimately became a paradigm shift for the industry. It was his small group of designers at the back of the Sheraton that ultimately grew into the force that designer and branded jewelry is today. In 1999, when I was still the fashion and luxury editor at JCK, for the millennium we did a profile of the people who had the most influence on the jewelry industry. I suggested Mort and wrote his profile; he was stunned to think we'd consider him in a league with Robert Shipley or Marcel Tolkowsky, but in his own way, he changed this industry as much as they did.

Mort Abelson was an unlikely visionary for the fledgling designer jewelry part of the industry, bringing his clear-eyed business sense to help this group of jewelry artists. He loved finding new talent and introducing designers to the traditional jewelry market. Wherever I went in the craft jewelry world, I seemed to run into Mort.

Mort, through his vision and support of fledgling jewelry designers helped elevate so many to the "super star" status that they enjoy today. Judith and I are so grateful for knowing him and his family...a great loss for all.

May it bring you gentle comfort to know that others care,
May it help you to remember that friends are always there.
May the love and strength of family help you face tomorrow,
And with time, may quiet memories
Help to ease your sorrow.
