Laura Mae Higbie, 88, a longtime resident of Cranford, N.J., passed away on June 10, 2013. Laura's life celebration will be on Thursday, June 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Gray Funeral Directors, 12 Springfield Ave., Cranford. Her funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, in the Cranford United Methodist Church, 201 Lincoln Ave. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Born to Austin and Eva Donald, in New Brunswick, N.J., on Aug. 3, 1924, Laura resided in Cranford for most of her life until moving to Waretown, N.J., in 2008. As a member of the Cranford High School Class of 1942, she had the good fortune to meet and marry Robert D. Higbie during World War II, and they became lifelong partners, lasting 67 years. Laura was employed by the First Fidelity Bank, Amoco Oil Co., and Adler-Royal Business Machines. Laura Mae was a longtime member of the Cranford Methodist Church and secretary to the United Methodist Church, and a member of the church craft group, and the Memorial Garden Committee. She was also a member of the Cranford chapter of the Camping Club FCRV and the Wedne sday Senior Club, volunteered for Mobile Meals for years, and helped serve with the Free Meal program in Plainfield. Laura was an avid camper and hiker, and was known as the "navigator" when traveling together with Bob in their RV all over North America. The White Mountains of New Hampshire was always their favorite destination, and they hiked all of the Presidential Range. Laura was a special and caring woman and will be greatly missed by her devoted family and her many friends. Laura is survived by her daughter, Susan Jayne Keith and husband, Arthur, of Waretown, N.J.; a son, James Russell Higbie and wife, Jane M. Edwards; grandsons, Erik James and Garrett Evan of Millington, N.J.; granddaughter, Debbi Shamley and husband, Gary (JR), and two great-grandsons, Corey and Mason of Tampa, Fla. She is also fondly remembered by her niece, Jeri Sternenberg. Laura was predeceased by her loving granddaughter, Lori Darchi, and by her beloved husband and sailor, Robert D. Higbie. Donations may be made to the Cranford United Methodist Church in her name.
