I just found out last night after thinking about Sam and why he has not returned my phone calls, sent a Christmas card (which in true Sam fashion was always late!), or answer my happy New Year text.. Well it was becasue he passed away this past September... I do know any of sam's family ( but i sure have heard stories), but Sam was a big part of my family... He was my GODFATHER... My father (Jude) and Sam were in the Air Force together, they were roommates for over 2 years but family for the past 40...Sam and my dad had such a special bond and friendship that when i came along (after 2 other children Jude and Melissa) Dad chose Sam as my Godfather... I am so thankful that my Dad chose to save "the best for last", meaning his last child and his best friend... Even though sam and I live so far away (him in chicago and me in Mass), we always stayed close through phone calls, letters and visits!!I will always have my memories of Sam, him buying me a sweatpants and sweatshirt soccer outfit that i wore to shreds when i was in 5th grade,my birthday card and money that i always used for new indoor soccer shoes, his cards always signed "your GodFather, Sam", always addressing his cards to "emily-lynn"his love for the Bears and Cubs (which i am of course a B-town fan but i never faulted him for that!), when Sam and my dad got together was so cute, they were like 2 kids reminicing over "the good old days", going in and out of Logan airport for the times he was coming in for a visit.. I remember him coming for my 1st communion, my graduation, he was unable to come to my wedding ( which i am still mad at the town of Aurora for not giving him the time off) and lastly my Dad 60th birthday. Sam and i arraged everything, he would fly in and i would pick him up with my kids (Blake 11 and Lana 8)because he had never met my kids, just seen them in all the pictures i sent.. That was a great visit and i will always remember my Dads face as i walked into the party with you.. i am sorry i have not been able to take a trip out to Aurora to meet your family and visit your stomping ground.. But because you (Sam) had to pass away, i have no excuse not to come now, i need and want to visit your grave... This saddens me to no end but i will come, i have promised for years and now i am going to make it happen.. Just stinks its for a different reasons.. Sam, i love ypu and will miss you greatlt, You were more than just a Godfather you were part of my family!!! XOXO
