Adele Greeley Obituary

Adele Gibbs Greeley August 3, 2011 Adele Gibbs Greeley, born Valentine's Day 1914, died peacefully in her sleep in Hospice House, Savannah, GA, on August 3, 2011, at age 97. She was the oldest of four daughters of Pearl Norton and Charles M. Gibbs of Gibbs Awning & Tent Co. Mrs. Greeley was a lifelong resident of the Syracuse, NY, area and graduated from Central High School. She earned her RN cap from Memorial Hospital in 1938 and her BS from Syracuse University in 1944. She was a nurse at GE and Bristol in the 1940s and then, after staying home to raise her children, went back to work for Syracuse City Schools as a school nurse for 16 years until she retired in 1983 at age 69. While a school nurse, she started making mittens for children who came to school with frozen fingers and most likely made a thousand pairs. In her retirement years, she and her beloved husband, Edward, lived in the cottage she loved on Tully Lake that her father built in the 1920s. They spent much of their time gardening, and they volunteered together for Meals on Wheels. She was a Christian and a longtime member of Lafayette Alliance Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Greeley; son, William E. Greeley; and her three sisters, Elizabeth Palin, Carol Hickok and Mary Jane Clark. Mrs. Greeley is survived by her son, John (Margo) Greeley of Marietta, NY; daughter-in-law, Marilynn Greeley of Culdesac, ID; daughter, Lynne (Don) Howe of Savannah, GA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Acheson, John Greeley, Aimee Greeley, Nora Hickey and Greg Howe; and eight great-grandchildren. Arrangements for a memorial service and interment at Oakwood Cemetery this fall are not yet complete and will be announced at a future date. Remembrances: Tully, NY, Fire & EMS, P.O. Box 128, Tully, NY 13159.

Dear Lynne, Don, John, Margo and Marilyn and kids,
It is with deep sorrow that i say goodbye to the last one in our family of the "greatest generation". She never lived close to us but we always felt she and uncle Ed were very special people... and they were wonderful people, giving and sharing the gifts they had with those less fortunate... She was a wonderful friend and sister in law to my mom, and know they both were ready to meet their Maker and their family and friends that have gone before them. You were wonderful to her, and she was always so proud of you all. You were there in her time of need and i know she appreciated that. Our hearts go out to you all.. God bless. Joannie and all the cousins agree

To John and family,
I didn't get to know your folks that well, but as year-rounders at Tully Lake Park, my parents (Wally & Arlene) did and counted them among their good friends. Your mom was a very caring person. Our sincere sympathy to you all.

The Greeley Family
My symapthy to all of you on your loss of lovely mother and grandmother.
Your mother, Adlele was my 4th cousin on the Norton family side thru my grandmother, Ida Norton Thompson. She and her parents used to visit us at the Thompson farm during the summers. Her father was a tentmaker.
I was at one of her sister's funeral few years ago.
May she rest in peace.
