When he wasn't keeping companies safe, he enjoyed working with students from the local schools as a substitute teacher and tutor. In Chittenango he was a prominent member of the Planning Board for 30 years. Michael was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth Quirk, along with his brother, Thomas, and sister, Daneen. Michael is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia (Cooper) of Chittenango; his children, Mary Ruthven and (Paul Colagiovanni) of Cicero, Kelli Handzel and Michael Quirk of Chittenango; his grandchildren, Stephen Handzel of Orchard Park, Brittanne and Anthony Handzel of Chittenango, Kasey Ruthven, Matthew and Paulie Colagiovanni of Cicero; a brother, James and (Cirila) Quirk of North Carolina and Laura Guigliano, along with her children, Michael and Lauren (Russell) Prevost, all of Patterson, NY and several other nieces and nephews. The family welcomes everyone to help celebrate his life of Friday, January 27, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango. A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick's Church, Chittenango. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango. Friends are then welcomed to join the family for a reception to follow at Delphia's Restaurant in Chittenango. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the Village of Chittenango's Trail and Creek Walk, 222 Genesee St., Chittenango, NY 13037. I am so sorry to have read just today (7/7/2020) that Mike passed away in 2012. Mike was a great guy. I liked him a lot. I was a young man on my first job selling Laboratory supplies & equipment in upstate NY, & I met Mike when he worked at an Engineering firm doing the environmental lab analysis. Mike was just one of those people who I recognized as someone who was always 'real'... real attentive... real polite....real honest....real sense of humor....yet capable of being real serious...& real competent.....a true blue person with a lot of integrity & caring mixed together. Mike was the kind of guy that (as the Irish would say) 'called a spade a spade'. As we got to know each other, he called them as he saw them. It was refreshingly so familiar of a characteristic to me (growing up in 3 generation under one roof Irish family) that being away from home & on my own in my first apartment didn't seem so far away. I'm thinking of something he said right now, & it's making me chuckle. He enjoyed 'the stage' & 'an audience' & could do so with a straight face. I'm semi retired now, & found my old address book, & looked through it nostalgically. I saw Mike's name, & thought I'd try to track him down. If I could, I thought I'd call, & get him to laugh that memorable hearty laugh of his (one way or another....hopefully finding a path through the formalities to needle him). Mike had such a hearty, real laugh. Patricia, I met you once or twice. I met Mike ~1978, & left the area in 1981(when I met my wife (Nancy) at a friends wedding (& realized that she was the 'one' for me). My fondest wishes go out to all of the friends & family; & my apologies for not staying in touch. Our house# is 215-576-5233. God Bless all. Hugh Carbine

"Dear Pat, and Family,

I am so very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I have known Mike since the 80's and have worked with him in the area of safety and health. I was an officer for Central NY ASSE with Mike and he was not only an inspiration but a great guy of fabulous humor. He always made me laugh. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I called his cell phone before the holidays just to touch base and say hello. I will truly miss him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers." Jenn Lawless (CNY ASSE)
