My Condolences to Zella's family. I remember her smiling face from our time as medical students. I have no recollection of any negative comments passing her lips in the four years we were at SUNY. RIP Zella...gone too soon.

David, Derek, and Danielle,
We were shocked to hear the news of Zella's passing. Our hearts go out to you at this time of terrible loss. We have so many fond memories of Zella during her radiology residency with "her brother" John. There were so many laughs shared those many years. Then the joy of watching the children come along. How proud she was of you. She was an extraordinary person who will be truly missed.

Dear Kennedy and Small Family I am so ery very sorry for your loss. Zella was precious to me and an angel here on earth as i am sure she is in heaven, we always greeted each other with a "big hug and I love you" I worked with her alot at the hospital and have come to truly love her and will always keep a light burning in my prayers for her and her family, she was an inspiration to many who knew her,and always kind. I send my deepest condolence to the family of Dr. Zella Small. May she rest in peace, and may your hearts be lifted to know what an inspiration she was to me during medical school. Rissa and I send our deepest sympathies to Zella's family. I have known Zella since 1977 and wanted to add my favorite memory of Zella. It is probably not widely known or remembered, but Zella was a surgery resident at Upstate for three years before she changed over to radiology. She spent several months on our Pediatric Surgery service and was arguably among the best residents we have ever had. We were making inquiries across the country to get Zella into a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship and then scheming to get her back to our practice. Unfortunately for us Zella changed her mind and became an outstanding radiologist, one who helped us out on many an occasion. We will miss her and her smile.

Dear Kennedy and Small family, I knew Zella from way back in the day, she was a beautiful person and anyone that met her, I'm sure was touched by her spiritual and generous ways. I am saddened to receive this news. I taught Zella as a student, and later practiced with her in the community. She was a wonderful person and a dedicated physician. She will truly be missed

This news leaves me so sad.Having spent 4 years with her in Medical School, I came to know her as a very compassionate leader and superior student of Medicine. She leaves a big vacuum. How can that be filled? She will be sorely missed.

It was truly a shock to find the message of Zella's passing on my message board this morning. While I have not seen her for several years, her memories in my mind are clear. Warm, comforting and compassionate to all of her fellow students at Upstate. As echoed by many, she will be missed.

Dear David, Derek, and Danielle,
It was an honor, and a pleasure to know Zella for over 25 years. I loved every minute of it. She was a compassionate woman, and a dedicated mother, wife, physician and friend. Every time we spoke, it was always about her three "D's", and if about herself, it was always something funny.
Zella helped me so much during the time of Jim's death. She was one of only a few people Jim wanted to see before he died. When the meeting ended, they both told each other "I love you." Jim died the next day. She was a true friend to both of us, and a gifted associate of Jim's.
Years ago we were so fortunate to spend a week with her in Hawaii for a conference. What a joy!!
Zella will always be a part of my family's memories.

I speak for Brittany and Evan when we say we are so sorry. Your mom was generous, fun, kind, deeply spiritual and one of the most positive people to meet. Our lives were made better from knowing her. When I think of first meeting your mom when Danielle cried in kindergarten, I knew I met someone special. Zella taught my kids about being selfless immediately. She had love for everyone in her heart. She donated so much to my classes in the city from books to gloves to her time. She met with them and as she visited was a role model for hard work and studying hard as a woman and as a Black professional. I am so proud to have known her We will always think of the fond memories we have had with joy. Zella was a joyful person. She laughed when she said she spoiled her kids but she spoiled everyone. And for that, we are blessed and thankful.
