Sam was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 20, 1945, to Russell Arthur and Betty Jane Loudermilk Moore. After serving in the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers, he graduated from Ohio State University. He began his career at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus and later moved to Columbia with his family in 1977. He retired in 2004 as Director of Training and Development with HCS Tricare Division. However, he longed to be among his many co-worker companions at Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC and returned to assist with projects for several years. For the past two years he was honored to be part of the Informatics Corporation of America proposal team in Nashville, TN. He was President of SEMcon, LLC and a Capital Partner with Wallick Investments, LLC.
As a member of Windsor United Methodist Church for 33 years, he served faithfully in many capacities. He leaves behind many friends who will miss his bright smile and warm hugs every Sunday. He also left a special secret for the children who loved "Mr. Sam".
He is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Michael Brown of Burlington NC; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and James Vanderslice of Taylors; grandchildren, Jacob and Phillip Brown and Emma and Palmer Vanderslice; sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Larry Nichols of The Plains, OH; brother and sister-in-law, Russell H. and Lyn Moore of Phoenix, AZ; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins all of whom were so special to him. He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank and Don Moore and sisters, Bertha McCollum and Pamela Mascari.
A memorial service for Mr. Moore will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May13, 2011, at Windsor United Methodist Church, with visitation following in Harbor Hall. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to Epworth Children's Home, P. O. Box 50466, Columbia SC 29250 or to Windsor United Methodist Church Fowler Scholarship Fund, 9500 Windsor Lake Blvd., Columbia, SC 29223.

Sam was the most outgoing, yet caring and giving person I know. He was always there when I needed help with a dificult situation. Sam was as good a friend as you could ever hope to have, and I will miss him very much.

Sam was such an exceptional person. His positive energy touched everyone he encountered and I never saw him without a smile on his face. He seemed to enjoy each minute and set a wonderful example of how life should be lived. The world will be a little less bright without him in it.

Sam is truly one of the best people we've ever known.
Friend, mentor, golfing buddy. Always positive - every problem a "piece of cake!"
Sam had so much room in his heart for everyone, if you passed him, you felt a little better because of his smile and hug ...
We love you, Sam!

My Dearest Rita, You and Sam will forever be in my heart. No one has ever loved people, especially children, more than Sam. He was God's gift to us all. I find comfort in knowing that God has a plan for all of us and that one day we will all be together for eternity. My thoughts and prayers are with you continuously. I love you both.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Sam. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by many. It has been many years since my childhood in Columbia, but I still have many great memories of Sam as my Sunday school teacher at Windsor United Methodist. He always full of energy. If he ever felt we needed a change of pace, he would occasionally take us for quick trip to Bojangles for a biscuit on Sunday morning. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

Rita and family,
I simply cannot believe I will not be seeing Mr. Sam's smiling face each time I enter Windsor. You and he have always been special to me and to my boys. You were among the first to embrace us and make us feel part of the Windsor family and we shall be eternally blessed to have known and loved you both. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

Sam was so much more than a friend to me over the 20+ years at BCBS. He was like a father when I needed him to be, a mentor when I needed help to navigate this ever changing crazy work environment and a friend to talk about ANYTHING with. He was never at a loss for words, or smiles or hugs! Sam, I miss you so much already! I'm just glad I'm going to the same place as you one day because I will need a big hug by then!
I wish love and support and a million blessings to the family and friends of this wonderful man.

I worked for Sam for many years and he was a good person and a great boss. Sam was like a candle that never burned out. His genuine love for others and his warm and caring spirit illuminated whereever he went. His light will continue to shine because he touched the lives of so many in so many ways. I will truly miss him. May he rest in peace. I hope the family takes solace in knowing how much others loved him too.

Sam was a delightful person to work with at BCBS. He kept his word and always had a sunny disposition. I am so sorry to learn that he did not have more years of good health in retirement.
May his family find comfort in the memories of his love for them.
