Martha Banks Obituary

Martha M. Banks, 61, died at home on Wednesday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Banks. Martha was a five-year breast cancer survivor.

Born in Scranton, on Aug. 23, 1949, daughter of the late Robert J. and Martha Ferber McGregor, she was a 1967 graduate of Abington Heights High School. During high school, she excelled in gymnastics and field hockey and was a repeat diving champion on the YWCA swim team. She was a 1971 graduate of Ithaca College, where after competing in national and international diving competitions, she capped a distinguished athletic career by becoming New York state collegiate women's diving champion of 1971. Martha co-founded the Jewelry Room in Clarks Summit in 1976 with Michael J. Banks and operated it with him until his death in 2007. She then continued the business with the assistance of her stepson, David Banks.

The Jewelry Room was founded to specialize in fine gold and silver jewelry, genuine stones and antique/estate jewelry, with a strong emphasis on personal service. Martha continued her jewelry studies with classes and seminars at specialized educators in the jewelry trade, among them the Gemological Institute of America and Stewart's International School for Jewelers. She also attended mineral and gem shows throughout the United States and summer jewelry conferences. New York City's trade jewelry neighborhoods and high-end stores provided her with a continual learning experience for 35 years.

Martha also was a jewelry educator, sharing her enthusiasm and expertise by speaking at clubs and meetings.

She died peacefully, surrounded by her family. The family deeply appreciates the compassionate care provided by Hospice of the Sacred Heart and by our devoted home caregivers.

She is survived by two sisters, Heather McGregor, New York; and Anne M. Fries and husband, Richard, Michigan; a brother, Robert R. and wife, Virginia D., Scranton; four nieces, Grace, Margaret, Virginia E. and Mary Martha McGregor; four nephews, Timothy and Daniel Fries and Robert S. and William McGregor; four stepchildren, Kimberly B. Gahl and husband, Peter, California; Michael Banks and wife, Jennifer, California; David Banks and wife, Kimberly, Lake Winola; and Jason Banks and fiancée, Vanessa, California; and seven stepgrandchildren, Hannah, Maxwell, Brittany, Molly and Mia Banks and Lily and Peter Gahl.

I will miss Marthie's smiling face when I came back to my hometown. The McGregor Family has a great place in my heart...as family. Mom passed on the 5th and I've been in a tizzy. When I learned of Marthie's death.....all I can say is that she'll meet my mother and daughter in Heaven along with Margie, Grandma Mac and others that will surround her with love and peace.

We are saddened by Martha's passing. It has been many years since we had contact with each other, but I will never forget our friendship. I especially remember our trip to New York to the jewlery district. Rest in Peace, Martha

I have known Martha and her siblings since grade school and we grew up within a few blocks of each other. She was one of the most unique women I know and I will miss her aplomb and her elegance and the fact that she always left a smile on my face when she walked through my life. My condolences to her entire family and all her friends.

Like her mother and father , she was one of the nicest people in Clarks Summit. Her parents were the first neighbors to introduce themselves to us when we moved here over 30 years ago. They were sadly missed when they passed and Martha will be too. I can't recall just how often she would help us choose the right piece of jewelry or even fix a small item free of charge. I'm sure she did this for many people because that was Martha--thoughtful and generous. Our since condolence to her siblings and relatives. Her life's journey has ended but I'd like to think that somewhere she is still selecting bright gems for His heavenly crown.

To Sing is to be Free By Aleksandra Djordjevic

for Martha

One day,
a robin flew to a tree
with feathers edged in white and satin gold.
I saw her there,
she was dear to me,
she spoke the truest language of my heart.
She sang in merry tunes
and consoled me
when she knew I missed her,
the song was like a strand of pearls draped upon my neck for the first time.
Now,
I stand beneath the same cherry tree,
where diamonds would scatter with her songs.
They are her diamonds and the gold is where she rests,
a complete vision of serenity enfolds me as I carve my initials on the tree...
I love you and she loved me.

"Martha was a beauiful woman, full of beautiful things. When I moved to Clarks Summit over thirty years ago, she was the first friend I made. She was interested in everything, and was a vibrant person who took wonderful care of her mother and her husband through their illnesses. For reasons why she and I never understood, we were sometimes mistaken for being sisters. I wish she had been my sister. I'm proud to say she was my friend. I'll miss her very much."

Words can never express. Another piece of my heart has gone to Heaven. My 60 years of wonderful memories will last forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all -- always. Kathie, Karyn and David

I haven't seen Martha or the Summit in years, but my memories of her are of a lovely, cheerful, and talented girl. Her laughter and quick smiles are still very clear to me. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and close friends. May they find strength in the Lord's promise that they'll meet again one day.

Martha showed true strength and courage in her journey and fight. If I had to describe her in one word...it would be "elegant". She arrived for daily treatments at our facility...always looking sharp and had such a wonderful and sincere way about her. My heartfelt condolences to the Banks family.

I had a dream about Marthie last night: she was lying in her hospice bed upstairs on Colburn Avenue in a beautiful gold outfit (remember: AUTUMN was her color scheme) and covered with jewels and gold, except for her face, which was smiling. --from Martha Yates Linde, a grateful friend and a Satisfied Customer
