As a child of a Village Schoolmistress and later a village teacher myself I really enjoyed the way in which Dora encapsulated all the strengths and weaknesses of village life in the twentieth century. From the image of children playing on the coke heap in the playground, through the arrival of the monthly staff pay cheques, the cleaner, caretaker, vicars, local people, incomers and the LEA staff, right up to what actually went on in the most important place, the Village School classroom, she was spot on. Her words gave life and understanding to a past time and a place still with us which continues to develop. Thank you Miss Read.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Saint's passing. She was my very favorite author. Her books have given me comfort, courage, and peace during those times when life gets difficult. Although I'm an American, Miss Read's beautiful novels started a love for all things British. I'm sure she will be greatly missed by her family, but her many fans will be comforted, as always, by her many books.

My mother-in-law, who is 3 months younger than Mrs. Saint, introduced me to Miss Read 20 years ago. I have all but one of her books on tape and cd and still listen to them each night before sleep. Her writing just puts me in a better place. Thank you and farewell, Miss Read.

From picking up Village School quite by accident in our public library some ten years ago I fell in love. After quite some tracking down, I was able to have all of Miss Read's books and have loved everyone of them - over and over again. I too feel I've lost a good friend.

I adore all of her books and am very grateful to Dora Saint for creating them. They have served almost as a form of meditation away from the stresses and challenges of daily life. Through her books I've come to love the Cotswolds and hope to visit one day. RIP, Dora Saint.

To Miss Read's Family and Friends,
What a loss to all. Her books have kept so many of us happy collectors of each and every book and have read and reread them so many times.
A cabin in the deep woods of Maine's Northern Forest was my home for ten years and Miss Read's books (read in order each time) were a godsend for company and delightful humor! I am just so grateful and will pass on my first edition collection to my great niece some day. Miss Read will always be read, my soul food for the last 55 years.
Thank you from a devoted American!
