My sincere sympathy goes out to The Hooks family!
I was a "64" graduate of Ribault High School and remember Ms. Hooks with fondest memories. I did not have the experience of visiting her at the office but held a high respect for her.
She will be missed very much and the world has lost a great educator and lady.
We need more dedicated people in the schools today, it would really make a big difference in the students of this day.
God Bless!

My condolences go out!
In the late '50s & early '60s the Dean Team was Mr. Silas, Mr. Brown & Ms Hooks. Being a frequent visitor to the Dean of Boys for my seemingly weekly "Swats" I once had a choice given as to who I would like my "licks" from...Silas or Hooks...HAH, I chose Mr. Silas. I had seen Ms Hooks swing some mighty swats. If those 3 could be cloned & in every High School today the world would be a better place.
I will never forget her ... few people pass through your life that affect you so as Miss Hooks did...
RIP Our Dear Ms Hooks!

Ms Hooks is indeed a legend. I spent 6 years at Ribault- grades 7-12. During that time I observed that she seemed to know everyone - not only by name, but she seemed to see our souls. She was an incredible educator and guide. She was no nonsense and everyone knew that it was fruitless to try misbehavior. When I was a senior, I went to her office for permission to leave school early and she looked at me and said, "Are you still here? They must have brought you in with the bricks!" In retrospect, those were some of the best years of my life- at Ribault, kids felt safe and cared about and Ms. Hooks was a big reason that feeling prevailed. My condolences and prayers go out to her family.

I graduated from Ribault in 1971. I was Ms. Hooks assistant in 1968. She was a strong woman who was feared and liked all at the same time. She set a good example for all people, but especially for females. She made an impact on my life and so did Ms. McCaskill, who was my 5th grade teacher. We need more women like these in today's school system. She will truly be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

I was in the class of '60 at Ribault High. I will never forget Miss Hooks... I kept forgetting my drum sticks and she made me a little baggie to wear on my neck... well, she MADE me wear it on my neck with my drumsticks in it.. how embarassing! She also had the most horrible concoction for "monthly pains" that once you tasted it.. you never had the pains again...or that she would hear of. She was a fair woman... everyone liked and feared her. I will never forget her ... few peoople pass through your life that affect you so as Miss Hooks did...

I was so sorry to hear about Ms. Hooks' passing. She was a huge influence in the lives of everyone she touched. She knew every student's name and you could never get anything past her, but you knew she was always looking out for your best interest. She was a legend and a special lady who will be missed.

I’m so sorry I missed the final opportunity to offer my respect to Ms. Hooks. I can never think of my time at Ribault without remembering her. She truly had found her calling. She was also my mother’s phys ed teacher at Jackson and my daughter has heard stories of Ms. Hooks. So, she continues to “live” in the generations of my family. She was the kind of lady who, once she passed through your life, you never forget her. I can only imagine how much better our schools would be today with the influence of a “Ms. Hooks”. God bless her family and comfort them with many precious memories of a life well lived. LaTrelle Lee LeFevre – Class of ‘67

To the family of Miss Hooks: I worked in her office during my high school years, 61-62. She was my mentor. A voice to reckon with! I admired her immensely; she touched the lives of many, and had the greatest dimples when she smiled. She will be missed! Harveda Inglett Moon, Kennesaw, GA

I remember Betty Hooks very well. I graduated Ribault in 1971. I saw her every school day and sometimes twice a day. Yes she was a legend at Ribault High School. She was stern and did not put up with anything from anyone. I gotta admit I admired her. She did not pull any punches. Thanks for that. My condolences to her family. May God bless. Miss Hooks had a special role in my life at Ribault. I was one of her "office assistants" and everyday at lunchtime she walked next door to the teacher's lounge, then came back with a small Coke in a bottle and pack of peanut butter crackers from the vending machine. Those were the days before vending machine were in the hallways, so it was a special treat! She never said a word, just put them down in front of me and kept walking on to her office. Mid-year of my senior year, she decided that I should apply for FSU, so she helped complete and sign the application, then wrote a letter of recommendation. She was admired, respected, and trusted. She didn't have to use a lot of words or raise her voice; it was all in her expression or actions She didn't hesitate to stop a girl in the hallway, and bend down and take the hem out of a "too short" skirt or stand and wait for one of the boys to tuck in his shirt. Yes, we knew she meant business. Hopefully, we learned the true lessons that she was teaching us, and we are better people because of her.

I graduated from Ribault in 1963 following my sister who graduated in 1960. Miss Hooks was a stern but loving dean of girls when we knew her. My sister got into minor trouble (skipping school, etc.) and Miss Hooks always asked me if I was going to follow in Pat's footsteps. "Not on your life!", I replied. I knew what would happen if I did. :) Miss Hooks was loved by us all and she will be very much missed. My prayers are with her family and close friends.

I knew Ms Hooks quite well during my years at Ribault from 64 - 68. She kept me in line and I thank her for that. She had also been my mother's gym teacher while at Jackson. Ms Hook's friend Evelyn McCaskill was my fifth grade teacher at Riverview Elementary and was one of the most loved teachers there. They made a great team and God Bless them, they made a lot of memories for us.

We lived across the street from Jackson High School in 1950 where Miss Hooks was a gym teacher. When I was 5, before the age of widespread, much less mandatory Kindergarden, my mother's child care provisions consisted of her watching me cross the street to go to the playground where Ms. Hooks was delighted to take me under her wings to watch over me. Imagine my delight 15 years later when I was offered a teaching position at Ribault High where Miss Hooks was the Dean of Girls. For 3 years we were coworkers, but she never let me forget that SHE was the administrator and I was the teacher. We did not really keep in touch, but we were always running into each other, usually in the lobby of a doctors office when I had to take my mother to the doctor. I'm glad Miss Hooks was a part of my life, a caregiver, a mentor, a supervisor, a friend for over 50 years.

Yes, Ms Hooks was a legend and will be remembered by all who were fortunate to know her. I never had to go to her office except to get permission to do something, however, she always wore her no nonsense look that everyone respected. Thank you Ms Hooks for being there for girls like me.

As Dean of Girls at Ribault High School, Miss Hooks had a commanding presence. As another writer before me stated so well, the girls knew "she meant business." I was fortunate enough to have spoken with Miss Hooks just a month or so ago before she passed away. I called the nursing home to get an update on her and was pleasantly surprised when her nurse handed Miss Hooks the phone. I told Miss Hooks that we spoke of her fondly at our class reunions and get togethers. I also thanked her for her positive influence on her students and wished her well from the Class of '67. She thanked me for the sentiments. I told her nurse that I doubted that Miss Hooks remembered me, as I never had to be summoned to her office since usually that meant you were in trouble. I mentioned to the nurse that I was afraid of her, but in a good way to which her nurse replied, "she still has it in her!" Rest in peace, Miss Hooks. Thank you for your positive influence on the girls from the Class of '67.

I grad. from Ribault in the class of 1970. I know Ms Hooks touched our lives in so many ways. She was a mom to us at school, and even though she was firm, she instilled alot in us. She cared for us, and what happened to us. She watched out for us. You will be missed. We will all meet you again some day. My prayers and special thoughts are with the family.
