William SULLIVAN Obituary

SULLIVAN William J. William James Sullivan, 55, of Swanton, OH passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, with his loving family by his side after a brief illness. Born in Toledo, OH on April 2, 1956, to Charles and Margaret (Lohberger) Sullivan, Bill a 1974 graduate of Cardinal Stritch High School will be best remembered for his strong work ethic and dedication to the service of others. Bill worked many years as an over-the-road semi truck driver, most recently for Roadway YRC Freight. He had previously worked for Air Liquide/Praxair, Johnson Controls, Vroman Foods, and The Toledo Blade. His work ethic was driven by his dedication to his children so that they may be given the opportunity to experience life in the fullest. The full scope of his service to others is immeasurable. Bill volunteered countless hours to The Toledo Seagate Food Bank, The Nature Conservancy, and to the service of those in need. His greatest passion was for the restoration and protection of nature. Those who knew Bill knew he seemed more comfortable when he was volunteering for The Kitty Todd Nature Preserve than he did in his own home. Many individuals came to know and love Bill because he gave up his personal time to help them by cutting and splitting firewood to help heat their homes during the winter or through many other selfless acts of kindness. Surviving Bill are his three children, Patrick, Kelly (Matthew Melchior), and Kevin; his previous wife, Laura Janis; sister, Meg Sullivan; brothers, Mark and Mike Sullivan, and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Charles, and his sister, Diane Sullivan. His family feels Bill passed far too early to fully enjoy the fruits of his labor for himself. For this reason, his family asks that those who knew Bill take the time to enjoy their lives and take pleasure in the beauty of the natural world he dedicated a great deal of his life to preserve. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, February 12, 2012, from 2-8 p.m. in the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road (east of I-280) Millbury, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday morning at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Historical Church, 130 Avondale Ave. Toledo, OH. Interment will follow at Lake Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve 10420 Old State Line Road, Swanton, OH 43558. Finally, the family would like to thank and recognize the caregivers at St. Vincent's Mercy Medical Center who cared for Bill in his final days. Dr. Shehadeh, Dr. Tita, Dr. Jamal, Dr. Katragadda, an Dr. Mahajan for their diligent monitoring of Bill's health and kindness. Jean RN-1B for her compassion and attentive care. The nurses of 4C who are too many to name, each of you cared for Bill as if he was a member of your own family. Collectively, you have all made this difficult period easier on Bill and those who loved him. We are forever grateful and in your debt. www.egglestonmeinert.com

Bill was a true environmentalist. Planting trees, pulling weeds, watching the highways and byways as he drove - finding people to call and ways to help our planet earth.

Lake Erie Waterkeeper
I remember him going to help the people in Katrina and going several times after to help. I remember him helping a cause in Alaska and getting needed items for Kitty Todd and other enviro projects here. He called regularly and asked how Lake Erie was doing. I missed his last call several weeks ago and am said we did not have that conversation.
Bill will always be an inspiration to the work I do in Lake Erie and for the Toledo Lighthouse. He will always be someone I think of when trying to make the right decision for the earth and for friends and family.
He will be missed a lot but will always remain alive with his role model ways of life.

I met Bill in the late 60's when both of us were Toledo Blade carriers. Immediately, we became BEST friends and did pretty much everything together. We enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, and the thing he liked best was betting on the ponies at Raceway Park. We were inseparable! Bill would show up at my house in the mornings and have a cup of coffee with my father and me. He always had a joke for my dad that would start our day with laughter. Then, we would leave and spend the rest of the day together. This went on for a number of years until girls caught our eye. Even after that, we still kept in touch. He was my Bestman and I was was his. After marriage, we often got together as couples and enjoyed spending time together. Life got very complicated as children started to arrive and work became very important to both of us,this was the thing that finally caused some distance between us. Bill was always in my heart, always considered my best friend, and when we did reconnect it was like time had stood still. We still thought the same way, had the same interest, and enjoyed talking with eash other about family, friends, life, politics, and values. To his children~ Patrick, Kelly (Matthew),and Kevin~ he always had a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eye when he spoke of you, he was very proud of you all. To his siblings ~Meg, Mark, and Michael, your brother loves you all very much and would exspress that to me often. He missed Diane so much and told me towards the end, he was happy he was going to get to see her again. To you Bill~ Until we meet again, my friend, I will always keep you in my heart and thoughts.I loved you Bill like a brother. For you were the brother I always wished I had. Love, Dan

I was so sorry to hear of Bill's medical problems and even more sadened by his passing. He was a hero in my eyes - always thinking of others and the needs of Kitty Todd Nature Conservancy. He gave and gave and was so appriciated by those who knew him. I am glad he was so well cared for at St. Vincent's and by his family. He will truly be missed and his acts of kindness and concern will live on in all he helped to accomplish at Kitty Todd. I feel fortunate to have known him.
