I knew John when he arrived to Ft Stewart back in the early 90's, I remember running into him again at Ft Knox in the late 90's and he was going to return to Ft Stewart. I asked him if he would ever go back to California and he said no because he was excited about retiring one day in Hinesville. I was sadden and shocked when I first heard his name on the TV and I was hoping it wasnt the John Marshal I knew. Please accept my sympathy on behalf on me and my family.

To the family and friends of John.
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know John, but he is my hero.

Dear relatives of John, my son SSGT Russell J. Verdugo is buried in Arlington National Cemetery along with your hero. I took some photos last Memorial Day Week-end 2007 and have a photo of your John’s grave site and marker. If you would like a copy emailed to you, please let me know. I know we are so very proud of our fallen heroes, but we miss them so.
In loving remembrance of our heroes!

Hello:
You do not know me but I left a tribute for your family member at an earlier date. The reason for my note is to let you know of a group of people who are willing to do portraits of fallen soldiers in wood free of charge. If your family is interested you can visit their website at [email protected].
com. I became aware of this site when I tried to do something special for my son's best friend's mother (my son's best friend was KIA 7/6/07, he was 18). Some of you may have already had this done but for those who did not and would like to, please contact them they are wonderful people.
God bless you and I am so sorry for your loss. Your HERO will never be forgotten.

Thank you for your willingness to defend the United States of America and all that we hold sacred. Though tears can never bring you back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that you made and our sorrow at your passing. You are truly a hero and your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Your mission on earth is complete. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the heroes who have passed before.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Marshall family in the loss of John. I did not know John, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. John it has been 3 years since you were taken. You are a hero and you will never be forgotten. While I was Arlington National Cemetery I stopped by and visited John and prayed.
I send each of you a hug from the most inner part of my heart.
