Looked at the 1953 Butler High School Year Book this past weekend. Had a chance to reflect on Carmens life and career. He was and is an inspiration to those who have overcome adversity. Carmen will always be in my thoughts. God Bless ! Jim

Several weeks ago I watched a special documentary on Netflix...it was titled "Medal of Honor". After watching the very moving stories of soldiers who were given the highest honor our nation can award, The Medal of Honor, my thoughts turned to my old classmate and friend Carmen Scialabba. Yes, Carmen served in the military. It was there that he honed his boxing skills. He wasn't awarded special medals for his service. He served. As I watched the stories of soldiers who went into battle, were wounded, and yet overcame injuries to show valor and bravery over and above, I thought of Carmen. I was at Pullman Park in Butler Pennsylvania the night Carmen was scheduled to box in the main event of a boxing program. Inclement weather forced the promotor to cancel the program Carmen caught a flight out of Pittsburgh the next day. Carmen became ill on the flight. It was later determined that he had polio. What Carmen did over the following years was unreal. He went back to school, got his diploma, and moved on with life despite being handicapped. He went from using crutches to a wheel chair. What he did as a school teacher, leader and role model was over and above. He is my "Medal of Honor" winner. Jim Lokhaiser

I was in the first class that Carmen ever taught at Westmont. Right from the beginning he related that it was all about character, not just academics. He spoke about his humble beginnings, boxing and having to remake his life as a scholar once he was stricken with polio. He was a success at all, and he would sometimes have a dozen students crammed into his station wagon taking us to some event like packing up goodies for the troops in Viet Nam. I was saddened when I googled his name and saw he was gone. I was a member of his boxing club and he really tried to keep everyone on the straight and narrow. G*d Bless you Carmen you inspired many.

Marie and all of Carmen's family, very sad to learn of Carmen's passing. Carmen was the first person I sought out when I moved to DC from Butler 25 years ago. He was a mentor to me and he always helped me find my way. Caremn will always be a hero who served his country and made a huge, positive impact on so many people. May your good memories and the pride in his many accomplishments help comfort you during this difficult time.

Dear Lori, Toni, Joi and Kellie,
Anyone who met Carmen found him unforgettable. Bright, funny, compassionate: he was the life of any room he was in. I can hear his laugh and see his dark eyes flashing. He was a very proud father (rightly so) and I bet he was great as a grandfather. No one could tell a story as well as Carmen, and he had so many incredible experiences to provide him a constant source of material. He and my uncle were JPs together in Johnstown and I worked with him in the early 80's in Jack Murtha's Washington office --and have never had a better co-worker. Hard work, a keen sense of humor, fierce loyalty and excellence characterized all he did, and he could be ruthless if you failed to live up to the high standards he set. I am sorry that I was never a student of his at Westmont, where he was wildly popular and had students equally inspired and terrified to excel.
You are very blessed to be the well-loved daughters of this magnificent human being. His passing is huge loss and I hope you are comforted by know how widely and fondly he is remembered.
With sincere condolences,
Debra Mayer
