RIP, our Hero, Dr. Clement Knight.

In 1990, our Dad, James Paymer, was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. He was 56 at the time. We found a clinical trial for him at NIH, where Dr. Knight was a Fellow. Our Dad got very sick and almost died upon his initial treatment, but Dr. Knight was by his side day in and day out. He also provided amazing support to my brothers and I, while our Dad was at NIH. Thanks to Dr. Knight, our Dad made it through this tenuous period, and lived for 18 months, which was unheard of back in the early 1990´s. We are forever grateful to Dr. Knight for his knowledge and support. To the Knight family, Our hearts go out to you with the loss of Clement. He was bigger than life and his smile was definitely contagious. Sending love and prayers your way. Sincerely, Lisa, Andrew and Steven Paymer

R.I.P Dear Dr Knight

Can't say enough of what a wonderful Dr. Knight was and is truly missed.

1st met him in 2000 after having a 2nd PE to my lungs. From my 1st to my last visit with Dr Knight he made me comfortable and he was so personable, talking about everything, from family, love of gardening and needing more studies on blood clots.
My 2nd visit we went over results that were not conclusive on what caused my PE's but he was very ademate that I should stay on this medication for life. Before I left Dr Knight pulled out a pad of paper and starting writing, then passed me this note. He advised if any physician suggested coming off medication for a medical procedure, give them this note with an alternate medication plan and tell them to call me direct if they had any questions.
When I heard of Dr Knight's death on 12-23-13, I couldn't believe it and wanted desperately to call that number on my note, but didn't instead found the guest book that Mrs. Knight has kept opened. I will cherish this note forever.

Dr. Knight is still greatly missed nine years later. He will always be in my thoughts and my heart. Not only was he a wonderful doctor but he went overboard in making his patients comfortable. He was very kind and reassuring. I trusted him and was not disappointed. Such a wonderful doctor and such a kind human being certainly earned a wonderful respite in Heaven. May God continue to bless and comfort his family with wonderful me,oriel!

Dr. Knight was my hero! He easily distracted me from worry with not only his “we’re going to beat this” attitude but with his fondness for African violets. His knowledge he shared willingly. I have never had a doctor who cared as much as he did. May God continue to comfort his family. Please know that he is missed by many.

I called you up and wished you a happy B/day, and, a week later, you just took off faster than the speed of light and you must be with the Great Architect Of the Universe. Always will love and miss you. I will be 65 in Oct - if I make it. Shushu/Torro

Almost 40 years ago I was working as a house surgeon in Bow, East London. One day an extremely tall young man walked into theatre in operating scrubs. This was Clem. In a short period of time we became friends and I loved his humour and warmth. I never forgot him although we have not been in touch for many years. I feel very sad that he died so young and send my condolences to his family, friends and patients. He was an exceptional human being

Just read of his death and am deeply touched almost a year after. Met him at St Augustine's (1968/69) and later at Legon. He was a person who took simplicity/openness to the highest level without hurting his character. Clem, rest in peace.

I was so stunned to hear of Dr. Knights passing. I was at work on 5/19/2013 at University of Maryland Hospital and I was talking with a patient family member and she happened to be a nurse at Howard County General. She was the one who told me of his passing. Dr. Knight cared for my dad in 2009-2010.
First with colon cancer and at the end with pancreas cancer. My dad loved him; especially his honestly about his condition. I never forget the day I was at the funeral home making the final arrangements for my dad I got a call from Dr. Knight sending his condolences. Right then I really knew that he really did care. So I just wanted to say to his family. I am truly sorry for your lost. I know how it feels to lose someone you love.

Hello Clem, everyday I 'day-dream' about you and me -I mean everyday!!
I remember all the days in Augusco (our boarding high school), Samba's rabbits and chicken we kidnapped and cooked them in the cassava farm those nights as starving students (joking). Our time in Tamale together and many many more memories that no one other than your beautiful wife would have had with you. The Lord took you away so soon from all of us but your living life with us still lives on for ever. I know you are at peace with the Lord and having Eternal Happiness with your father,my father, my son Andrew and your brother David. I know that you are waiting for all of us and that we will all rejoice for ever when we meet sooner or later. Look down upon us and guide us through this valley of tears every day until we get together for ever more. Lots of Love from all of us. Shushu (Torro)

It's taken me a while to write something here because the last thing i ever imagined was this. I thought there was going to be that day in my life where i will have called you to invite you to my wedding(you always asked me if i was married after i started turning into a man. I also had plans to call you one day to inform you about my next big thing. The very 1st time you called me on the phone you believed in me(the young African kid in America with the simple drive to making it) , after we met you made me an automatic friend and what made me always smile was how you will always introduce me to your friends as your friend. Doc to me you were my mentor and you were simply a special mentor. You thought me one important life lesson, a lesson which keeps me going, you thought me to work hard regardless of how much i had. It's sad i didn't get the opportunity to spend a few hours with you before your departure. I will have loved that but God knows best. I pray for you wherever you are now , I pray for your wife and children. Rest in Peace Dr. Knight. You were a wonderful human and i will forever miss you.

I am yet another of Dr. Knight's thankful patients. Dr. Knight saw me through 2 cancers. I thought I may have been the only patient who he seemed to care so much for and whom he always asked about our families as though we were old and dear friends. I shouldn't be surprised to know that he was just as interested and concerned about all of his patients. I can't fathom that Dr. Knight is no longer with us. My selfish self thinks, "whatever will I do without him"? and then I think about him and his family. He was an outstanding man and physician. My thanks to God that I found myself in Dr. Knight's hands and that Dr. Knight is now in the hands of God. Blessing to his family.

I met Dr. Knight 7 years ago when I was diagnosed with CML. I was 30 years old and 10 weeks pregnant. The news of this diagnosis was devastating for my husband and I because we were faced with the decision of aborting our unborn child in order to save my life. Dr. Knight knew my husband and I had faith in God. He told us to pray, while he researched and consulted with physicians near and far. I was Dr. Knight's first patient diagnosed with CML while being pregnant and saving both of our lives was his top priority. With God all things are possible, and Yes Dr. Knight we did it. Our son is 6 years old and he wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Dr. Knight's efforts in making sure he had a chance in life. It was a joy for Dr. Knight and his staff to see Josiah when he came with me to the office visits. I'm sorry that I hadn't bought him to a recent appointment. He's in the 1st grade now and is doing well. Dr. Knight would always ask about him and I would show him pictures when I came for my regular appointments. My family and I are so ever grateful of being blessed with a wonderful doctor in the midst of a medical challenge. I will never forget Dr. Knight and his big welcoming smile every time I walked into his office. He definitely was an angel sent from above and he always kept a smile on my face.

My dear Clem,
News of your sudden passing on has shocked all those that had the privilege and pleasure of meeting you from Ghana to England to the USA.

We first met in the year of the Montreal Olympics and the hottest of English Summers.

I will always remember your huge spirit and frame coming from Ghana and stooping through the front door of number 10 to be greeted by our household of students and artists from around the world here in north west London.

You were a man on a mission. A mission to be reunited with your childhood sweetheart, Matty, and a mission to successfully complete your medical studies. You achieved these missions with love and distinction to become a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, doctor, colleague and friend to all who had the good fortune of being touched by your generosity, wisdom, humour and zest for life. Clem, you have healed and brought joy to many. Thank you my friend.

Got to go now, off to the Green Cottage for some of our favourite Chinese followed by a rocky road cone.

A biento my dear friend. God bless and rest in peace.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39 and I credit him with being one of the wonderful doctors who saved my life. He was a funny and gentle man who truly cared about his patients. If I ever needed him he was always there for me. He was especially happy when I hit the 5-year mark and I knew then that I was fine. I am deeply saddened at the news and I will miss him terribly. He always made me laugh and he and my husband had many wonderful talks during our appointments. I will keep him always in my prayers. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. What Shock!! I was so sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Knight. He had been my doctor for 5 years. Although I did not have cancer,he was treating me for a rare blood diease (MGUS). From the first appointment, he made me feel at ease. We talked a lot about his africian violets in his office. As I was leaving he gave me one and his cell number on the first day.
My condolences to his family. I know that he is in a better place although this place will miss him greatly.
RIP Dr. Knight, we all loved you but GOD loved you best.

My condolences to the Knight family. I happened to see the celebration notice in the paper today and was shocked. Dr. Knight helped my mother and sister survive cancer more than once. He looked after me as well and was alway on top of things regarding my preventive care. He was the only doctor I ever felt was really invested in helping me avoid cancer or catch it early. He was a wonderful doctor and will be greatly missed.

Dr. Knight was a bit intimidating when we first met, but I soon grew to know just how much he cared about my treatment. His size and booming voice disguised the generous, kind, gentle and thoughtful physician I came to know so well. Thank you for the wonderful care. God Bless.

I was so shocked to hear the news today and I am sorry that I missed saying Goodbye to very good man. He treated both my parents for years and was in love with my hearing dog Pepe and would always ask my parents for me to bring him in for a visit. This is a great loss.

Dr. Knight was one of the kindest men that I have ever met. His compassion while treating Cancer inflicted people was inspiring. His support while my husband was going through cancer treatment and his passing was appreciated. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to his family, friends, colleagues and patients. Dr. Knight treated my mother-in-law this past year until her death with such kindness and care that she truly looked forward to her visits. He joked with her that she reminded him of "Mrs. Marples", a British character in a TV show that none of us had ever seen, but that didn't matter. He just giggled when he saw my mother-in-law and immediately the two of them were laughing. At one of our last visits with Dr. Knight, he was proudly wearing a pin on his shirt that said "Grandpa" and even showed us pictures on his phone of his new grandchild. What an amazing man and healer. He will be missed by so many people. May God Bless his family with wonderful memories of a truly wonderful man.

I first met Clement Knight(I think about 36 years ago)at the infamous house , number 10 Canfield Gardens, in London that was occupied by a large number of motley characters and misfit students like myself. Clement was always someone that walked around with a smile on his face and exuded a 'joi de vivre' that transmitted itself to others. He was truly wonderful and charming company. The other thing that stands out about Clement is that he was the kindest and niccest person that I have ever met. He always insisted on paying for everything and for everyone. At first you'd argue with him, but even if you'd just won the lottery you'd learn to stop arguing with him and let him pay. That's how he was. Stubborn as a mule. It's been some years now since I've seen him but he will be sorely missed by a lot of people. And if there is a heaven somewhere up there then you can bet your bottom dollar that he'll be there arguing with the angels and insisting on paying for their new wings or something as well as putting a smile on their faces. A truly wonderful man who has aachieved so much with aparent ease as reflected by that larger than life smile.

Shock and sadness filled me when I read of the passing of Dr. Knight. We've all lost a wonderful man and a wonderful doctor. He treated me through 2 cancers in the course of 18 years. There wasn't a moment when I thought I was not receiving the best that medicine could offer. Whatever will all of us do without him? Condolences to his family and to his patients. Thank you, Dr. Knight. I'll never forget you.

I,too,am one of Dr.Knight's patients who can say " He saved my life." As a three-year cancer survivor, I am shocked and saddened to realize that Dr. Knight will no longer be there to encourage, counsel, advise, and heal. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to you, his family. You knew him as none of us could, and your loss is greater than any we feel. May The Great Physician comfort you and uphold you in His eternal love.

What a wonderful gift Dr. Night gave to his patients. I will never forget him and will miss him even more. The first time I would meet with him he would explain and inform me that I had breast cancer. I was seated with my husband and eldest son and knew I had to be strong for them. After Dr. Night drew pictures he came to me on bended knee as to propose and would hold my hand. I asked, are your proposing? How our fears would become smiles so quickley, I new if I followed his advice I WOULD survive. The journey would be long and many mountains to climb but the advice to think positive and listen to my body would carry me with faith, hope, family and friends. With that I would remind myself of families and witness how blessed I was when I saw other young women going through the same thing, he was always a phone call away and would always call me when he ever he knew of difficult times. I would often look at myself in the mirror and talk to myself hearing what I did not want my family to hear but with out a word when I saw Dr. Knight he always seemed to know what I was thinking and always said that if it was worth thinking about it was worth talking about. There are no words, gifts or flowers to express how much he ment to me and my family. I am a 12 year survivor due to Dr. Knight along with prayers from family and friends. Our sincere sympathy and prayers are with you all. Betty and Bob Green

I was shocked and upset to hear of Dr. Knight's passing. I had complete faith in him as my doctor. He was so human, and expected that of others. I recall the day he said to me "you are going to beat this, aren't you?" And I did, or we did. He had such a presence. Though I learned of his passing a few weeks ago and more recently, about his health. I miss him deeply. I have no doubt the man is a saint!

I had recently seen Dr. Knight and he ask me- how long ago did I start seeing you- I said it would be 10 years on about. 9/18- cancer free - that is wonderful! As a deacon you cknow "God is good.". I said yes that is true. I will miss this. wonderful, caring Doctor but also I considered a friend. "Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.". Condolences and prayers to his family. I regret missing his service.

As you can see from the 101 people who commented so far, Clem Knight was a wonderful, caring and considerate individual who loved his patients and made a big impact on the world. I worked with Clem when he was an oncology fellow at NIH. As a nurse, I always enjoyed when Clem was on-call. He would always answer his pages promptly, provide compassion and excellent clinical expertise to his patients, and provide witty comments to make the shift pass by quickly. I haven't seen him in years, but would often refer patients in the area to him for care, knowing that he would take care of them with the same compassion and expertise as he displayed at NIH. He was an all-around good person and we will miss him dearly!! Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. His legacy will live on through all of you.

Dear Mattie, Nicky and JoJo. It is so difficult to express in words the deep sadness that I've felt when learning of Clem's so sudden and premature passing. Please accept my very sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy for you, as well as for all the people who share the grief's of Clem's tremendous loss. I have such fond memories of the good times I had the opportunity to spent with you guys. It has now been some years, but it feels as if it was just yesterday. I shall more particularly cherish the memory of Clem's gentleness, great sense of humor and contagious smile. I'll miss him dearly. With much love to the whole Knight family and close friends. My husband Pete and I were privileged to meet Dr. Knight in his Columbia office just this past June. He was so kind, thorough and wonderful to my husband. We both feel that he saved my husband's life by referring him to his dear colleage at the University of MD Medical Center for further treatment. We were both so shocked to hear of his passing. But as bereft as we are--we know that he is in a better place. May perpetual light shine upon him and may God grant him eternal rest. And may God give comfort and peace to his family and friends.

Dr. Clement Knight,
While I was only granted the privilege to meet you and your lovely wife once from the descriptions of your memory, I would be a better person today to have had the opportunity to known you. I hope one day to meet you again and spend some time growing in your embrace. I am sorry for your families grief and wish I had some ability to help them through. May peace and comfort come to them from the goodness of your soul. May you rest peace as there is comfort to know the lord has set aside a place for you.

Eternal rest, grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace Amen.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I first met Clem when he was training at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda. He was, even then, a "doctor's doctor" who was equally passionate about the field of medicine and the patients entrusted to his care. He is someone who touched all who had the priviledge of knowing him and the world is poorer for losing such a great and wonderful human being.
