I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Ortner was a great and very kind man and an excellent mentor. He really contributed so much to paleoanthropology and I'm lucky to have known him.

I shared with Kjell Sandved and many others a deep affection and admiration for Don as a superior human being. Our symposium, HOW HUMANS ADAPT, brought us closer as colleagues. Unhappily, our agenda did not include how to adapt to his loss. Yet, his archaeology in Jordan gave us some clues about early ideas of immortality. Faithfully, Wilton

I am so sorry for your loss. Don was my mentor and friend, since 1988. I will miss his advice, his humor, and his extensive knowledge. It is truly the end of an era in paleopathology.

Don was a first-rate scientist and great colleague whose sage advice I always greatly valued. He will be missed by all of us at NMNH, but his scientific legacy will live on.

Needless to say, Don was a great friend to all members of my family. He was loved by all of us. Davy considered him a life long friend. He too would be sad. Joyce, Donnie, Allison and Karen my heart hurts for you all. We must continue to look forward to Jesus return and we can be re-united. Davy and Don can one day sing together again.
