It was a pleasure to work with Eleanor. Her knowledge of Montgomery County was unsurpassed. Her dedication, research and attention to detail were exemplary. My condolences to her family.

I never met Eleanor although I spoke to her on the phone and relied on her historical research. I am particularly indebted to her for an unpublished manuscript on the Beall and Johns family. In my forthcoming book, From Slave Ship to Harvard, I call that manuscript the first, in-depth scholarly research on the ex-slave Yarrow Mamout, who is the subject of my book. I was always impressed that Eleanor devoted so much time to Yarrow. I called her in 2006 after I had an article on him in the Washington Post Magazine. I thanked her then for what she had done. Her research was always of the highest quality, and I know she was proud of it. I want to extend not only condolences on Eleanor's death but also appreciation for her life to her family.

Eleanor's writing and research are mush admired at the Montgomery County Historical Society, where she edited the Montgomery County Story from 1989 to 2003. Her work her is still in constant use by genealogy and local history researchers. She is missed.

My deepest condolences to Ellen, John, and Margaret, and to Eleanor's other family members. But what a blessing that she lived such a full and long life, and has so many descendants! She looks very nice and has a great smile in the photograph.
