My condolences to Mary and the entire McShalley family on the loss of your mother. She was a generous person...I recall the meals she sent to my family when I was young and my mother was sick. I will always remember "our Utica friends". With thoughts and prayers,

Our heartfelt sympathy to Mary, Anne, Colleen, Frank, Liz and their families. Mrs. McShalley was a loving, kind Irish mother, who was wonderful to everyone, treated us all like her own children and was loved by everyone who knew her. She and Mr. McShalley were family! I loved laughing with her, and her quirky sense of humor. I admired her love of her family, community, her church and her love of sports. She always was able to set an extra place at her table for one more child. I always felt welcome at their house! Her greatest joy were her children and then her grandchildren. What a lucky family to have Betty as their mother, and what lucky firends we are to have been part of the McShalley "family." I will treasure knowing Betty always. Our love and sympathy to all of you. Kathy Kiley Quinn and Terry, Megan, Brandon, Kelsie and Kylie Quinn, Fredon, NJ

Hysterical laughter abounds above as Jolly Way reminiscences begin.
Betty was strong, handling 5 very rowdy children, especially alone after Joe died. She was the quintessential Irish matriarch with the quick Irish temper and a heart of gold. Generous and loving to all, taking in extra kids (a certain only child comes to mind) to add to the madhouse. With nary a complaint, adding kids for dinner, for sleep overs, for a trip to the pool and to those memorable baseball games in the sixties. Always with a packed lunch of sandwiches, snacks and drinks (you could bring coolers then) that got passed down the ever growing row of kids and stragglers. She was Irish, so Irish with that gift of gab. Betty would talk to anyone and charm the pants off them. At a baseball game, bringing sandwiches down to Ann who had saved her money to sit in the box seats, (5 dollars!) Betty schmoozed with the usher who let the whole family come and sit behind Ann for free. There were fireworks that day. With an easy smile, a quick wit and always a story to tell that would bring the listeners to their knees in fits of laughter. Betty loved to laugh. Joe had her in stiches. (I thought I would tie one on anyway) Her son Frank brought her to tears. (Birth of a Nation) Mary her oldest reduced her to fits of coughing. (Stripping for a spoon on a string) A good joke, a badly told joke (my mother was notorious for that) laughter ran rampant around Betty. I can hear her laughter now echoing through the air like the pealing of the church bells. We love you, we miss you but will always remember you with a smile and think “Do you remember when……?”
Our hearts are with you all. Love Karen

Betty will live in my heart forever. Growing up in Garrett Park and playing with Mary,Anne,Frank Colleen and Liz on Jolly Way. Betty would say ok kids it's time for a nap. Oh how we hated to stop playing and take a nap. But in a matter of minutes we were fast asleep. Betty is our guardian angel. She is loved now and forever.

Aunt Betty will never be forgotten. From her devotion to her family, friends, faith and sports teams (BROOKLYN Dodgers, adopted Orioles and Redskins) and generousity to being Jolly Way's original "Block Mom", she touched the lives of so many and left this world a better place. You will be missed. RIP.
