JOHANNA JULIA FERKO (Age 89)
On Thursday, January 10, 2013, at her home in Rockville, MD. Born in Arnold, Pennsylvania, "Jo" was beloved wife of Peter Ferko; caring mother of Peter Ferko, Anna Sody, and Theresa Butrum; loving grandmother to her six grandchildren. She worked as a nurse for more than 25 years at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and shared her beautiful voice in the choir of the Ukranian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with Parastas at 7:30 p.m. Funeral of Divine Liturgy at Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, 4250 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC, on Wednesday, January 16, at 10:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. I will miss my life long friend and our many conversations in recent years even though we haven't seen each other for some time. I have many, many happy memories of our friendship. She will be missed. My sympathies to all the family.

To Peter, Anna, Terry, & Pete Jr.,
I am VERY MUCH deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved, loving Wife/Mother. Thank you for thinking of me; to call/inform me of her passing! I was VERY fortunate to have worked closely w/YOUR "Jo" in the O.R. @ Suburban Hosp.from '74-'79. Jo was always so kind & gracious to me in my former workplace. I visited her many times; during my stay in Md.for a few short years. I remember when one Christmas, ALL of her Family were visiting,(YEARS AGO!); & I had the pleasure of meeting them ALL-when we were ALL much "younger". It was VERY "memorable" & always fun talking of our Heritage while Jo was making "kiffles", etc. in the Kitchen. We use to talk about all the "Slovak Traditions"; & her Relatives in the "Coal-Regions". I WILL MISS the YEARLY Xmas-card/info exchanges; that I SO looked forward to each year. Even when Pete & I spoke of PennState & Football. When I would visit my Daughter(in Va.), a few yrs. ago, I remember a GREAT "moment" of a call/conversation w/Jo; when I was able to speak w/her. I will ALWAYS cherish those cards & memories. My heart aches for her passing; as Jo was truly a great work-friend. I will NEVER forget her & her Family. People touch your lives in "different" ways; & "Jo" made mine one to be "treasured". I wish I was closer to attend her Viewing; but DO KNOW that I am thinking of her & will ALWAYS keep her memory in my thoughts.
