LEON GRANT Obituary

LEON M. GRANT  January 19, 1925 - October 26, 2012
Leon M. "Lee" Grant passed away peacefully at his home in Silver Spring, while surrounded by his family. Lee is survived by his beloved wife, Anna "Lilo" Grant, sons Peter (Sheila), and Stephen (Maryann) Grant and daughter Lisa (David) Higgins as well as by his seven grandchildren Jennifer, Bridget, David, Kelly, Charlotte, Jack, and Meaghan. Lee was a native Washingtonian having attended Ben Murch Elementary School, Alice Deal Jr. High and Woodrow Wilson High School. When his WWHS Class of 1942 was graduating, Lee was on a train bound for Paris Island having enlisted in the Marines. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division where he participated in the Palau and Okinawa Campaigns. After the war, Mr. Grant attended GWU and later received his master's degree in Commercial Science. He had a career as a stockbroker, and he was very proud of the integrity he brought to work with him every single day. His career allowed Lee the flexibility to teach 1st period accounting throughout the 70's and early 80's at St. John's College High School as well as the time to attend virtually every practice his children participated in. Some of his fondest memories are of his students and of the many student-athletes he came into contact with both as a father and as Coach Joe Gallagher's Team Moderator for hundreds of the "Johnnies" basketball games. The family will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 3 at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Western Ave. at Quesada St. NW, Washington, DC. Mass and a celebration of Lee's life will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to St. John's College High School, Attn. Athletic Department, 2607 Military Road, NW. Washington, DC 20015-1099.www.CollinsFuneralHome.com

The anniversary of your passing is tomorrow, 9 years ago. I think of you every day and talk often to my students about the many lessons you taught the three of us. I tell them that you are my Hero. Always were, will always be. You raised us to be good people, to care deeply about others, and to love unconditionally. I am the person you made me, I couldn´t have had a better father, you are missed by your three children, your seven grandchildren, as well as all those that got to know Lee Grant over the years. Thank you for being the man you were.

I am a Cold War historian and I came across an interesting document at the National Archives re: Leon M Grant Sr that might be of interest to the family. Can someone from the family please email me? Thank you!

To all those who have reached out in support of our family, offered condolences on our dad's passing, and/or shared personal remembrances of how Lee Grant was a plus in their life... "thank you". We are very blessed as a family to have such wonderful friends in so many places. It's all a tribute to both of our parents, Lee & Lilo Grant.
Most sincerely,
Peter Grant

The few times we met Mr. Grant was always interested in hearing how I was doing. He remembered every detail of our previous talks, it was amazing. I especially remember a chance to be with the SJC Team Moderator while I was in VA. for work. Pete got me a ticket to the SJC vs. DeMatha basketball game (it was the late '70's at DeMatha, Mr. Grant would remember). I sat behind the bench with Mr. Grant and Stephen at DeMatha's gym and watched a classic game between the two rivals. Mr. Grant new every player, every statistic, the history of the previous years; it was great.
