Norma and I want to add our words to these condolences on the demise of your mother. I will always remember her (with love)as a true Southern lady so gracious and accepting of us all. How well you cared for her when she was not quite up to it! I have always treasured the memories of the family gatherings at your grandparents which Dave and Mary continued in their home. It was a time of wonder and merriment when the Shank girls got together. It gave me a warm feeling of family (that I had missed)to renew acquaintance with Mary Lou,Fran & Leslie at my brother's wake. I wish we could have more togetherness. Family ties are important, cherish them. Our love to you all. Jim and Norma Fleishell

I would like to say that Mary, Dave and the entire Bowie family was such a huge part of my young life. It’s hard to believe that was such a long time ago and I really miss those wonderful days in the Bowie house. Leslie, you were my best friend for so many years and this event reminds me of so many good times together. Hank, you were my second big brother that I leaned on so many times. MaryLou and Fran, you taught me how to dance and play twister upstairs in your bedrooms. There has been so many good memories together in Bethesda, at the cabins in Virginia and just in general. I miss all of you and hope to see you sometime soon.

Dear Bowie Family--Mary Bowie's passing into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, brought back many nostalgic memories of my contacts with the family over the many years that we have been friends. Many years ago,I lived several houses away from you and I remember the times when Leslie brought her bicycle to my house so I could adjust her chain, handlebars, seat etc.,only to go with her to her home to see her train her wild animals in the back yard, and then to play croquet and football with all of the other kids. I remember we enjoyed the same pet squirrel(and 2 babies)who were very tame and who were crawling up the screens to be fed or would come into the house to take peanuts out of our hands. Dave and I had a Wellington Jewels store in Virginia Beach and Richmond:while in Virginia we bought some property in Burr Hill. My sons and Hank helped to build a house on the property and had fun riding a motorcycle that we bought--also got stung by some bees. These are only a few of the great memories, but I'll never forget the Bowie Family and the great times we spent together, especially in the fun room next to the living room, where we ate, drank, sang, danced and played games. I will always remember you all. May God Bless You and keep you Healthy and Happy

Dear MaryLou, Fran, Hank, and Leslie:
You, my dearest and oldest friends, growing up through all those intense and awakening and fun-filled prepubescent years and beyond. Days spent at your house with Mary and Dave. Who was going to be currently occupying which bedroom? Mary and Leslie tucked away in one of the rooms. All the many doggies. Leslie training the dogs in her back yard obstacle course. Thanksgiving and holiday turkeys with all the trimmings. Teriyaki shrimp. Cokes in bottles. The Redskins. Mega parties. The back TV room off the living room. The basement. Steve. Dave the DDS. Friendship Hts and Woodies and Saks. Rehobeth Beach and the Whoopie House. The wonderful and amazing Bowie legacy. And all through it all, your precious beautiful mother, and your dad too. How I loved Mary (and your daddy too). Her infectious bubbling laugh, her sweetness, her love. I have often patterned my mothering skills from Mary, and hence, have thought of her often through the years. She was so very special to me. I regret having never told her just that, but alas, perhaps she is hearing me now. Up to heaven you go Mary, young and happy with your beloved Jesus, and Weaser and Dave and many others. Fly high sweetheart. We miss you down here. Love you so much. Until we meet again…
