On Saturday June 2nd, Melvin C. Miller -- my great-grandfather and the man who taught me how to read, write, do arithmetic, throw a ball, ride a bicycle, drive a car, and most importantly be a good family man and decent person -- passed away in Silver Spring. Papa not only stood right next to my own dad as my father figure and personal hero, but he was also responsible for raising three generations of our family, and as a top Pentagon engineer during the Second World War and Chief of Propellants and Explosives during the Cold War, led development of the "High Velocity Armor Piercing" shells that were decisive in defeating the Nazis during WWII(!) The amazing thing was that he called the shots not only in life, but in death. He had told everyone that he didn't need to eat anymore and was "going to be leaving in a week" and passed away one week to the hour later in his sleep, with my mother and I holding his hands, having lived a life full of love and knowledge. Even in his last weeks, we were speaking about how he witnessed the first computer in America while working for the DoD, how he and his brothers got a private tour of Mt. Rushmore as the presidents' faces were first being dynamited and carved in, how he witnessed the first rocket launches the US attempted over the South Dakota badlands during the 1930's, how he drove to the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago w/ Grama on his Harley-Davidson, how his father homesteaded land and build his childhood home by hand in what was then the disputed "Dakota territories", how after the Indian Wars ended in 1896 through his childhood in the 1910's, his mother befriended displaced Indians who she would take in and feed as they passed by looking for a friendly face during their travels, how he and his brothers ran the greatest apiary / honey farm in Codington Co., George E. Miller & Sons honey, and stories about his Aunt Lulu and her husband who was a US Civil War veteran(!) The man had seen it all and was truly a living link to the past.
