Richard was always good natured, kindly, witty, funny human being who made everyone around him a little happier... a little more at peace.

Time has passed but the great memory of Dickie is still with with us. He was a very special person. This photo was taken a week before he passed, unbelievable. I'm sure he's still smiling.

I remember Richard as a calm and smiling person in the office. He was a true gentleman to his women colleagues. His instructions in cartography were invaluable to my career development. We were "walking buddies" during lunch breaks in Rockville, where we talked about the gardens in a nearby residential neighborhood. I will never forget his generosity of bucketsful of hostas to start a garden at my North Potomac townhouse. As I read through the entries of other colleagues, the word generosity reappears so often. I am deeply sorry I could not be there for the memorial service. My brother died the same week. Godspeed to the arms of Jesus, Richard.

I worked with Richard for 5 years before he retired and often enjoyed some good conversations and at times some good walks around tho old Rockville complex. He was one of the first people who instructed me into the methods of nautical cartography. Richard was always friendly and outgoing, and a fun guy to work with, he will be missed by many.

I worked with Dick at NOAA. What a kind and gentle man. When my wife and I bought a house, Dick asked about the yard. I commented that I was disappointed that it was one of the few properties in the neighborhood without any dogwoods. Dick showed up to work a few days later with four tiny flowering dogwoods in gallon containers. Very thoughful. For a quarter of a century those dogwoods have grown tall, wide, leafy and tease me by producing very few flowers each year. They are getting crowded out by other trees and I have considered yanking them but then I remember who gave them to me. The next owner of our home will have to decide what to do with them.

The other day I sat on a chair on my patio and remembered that the chair I was sitting on was given to my by Richard in 1974, the first month I started working at NOAA. I had moved to Rockville from California and had no furniture. Thanks to the generosity of Richard and his wife, I was given 4 wooden folding chairs to use. This simple act of kindness still resonates today!

I was so sorry to hear that Dick has passed on. I worked with Dick at NOAA and my fondest memories of him are of the years when we worked together in the miserable basement of Bldg 2 in Rockville. The basement had few windows, almost no ventilation, and clumps of mold everywhere. Fortunately we had some wonderful people like Dick who came to work every day with an even temper and a knack for seeing humor in the most unlikely places. He was a loveable teddy bear kind of guy that everyone liked and enjoyed being around. Rest in Peace, Richard.

It is Richard's faith and humanity that have held together the members of Romeo (retired old men eating out). Like the rest I will never forget the joy he brought to our gatherings. I pray that all his family and friends will find comfort in his memory.

To the friends and family of Richard,
I worked at NOAA with Dick for many years. He was one of my first contacts and trained me on a few of the important aspects of the job.
