RICHARD N. KERN, SR.
On Thursday, August 1, 2013 of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of Dolores M. Kern; father of Richard, Jr., Robert, Joseph, Constance, John and Eric. Also survived by 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a lifetime civil servant at NSA. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Tuesday, August 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Andrew of The Apostle Church, 11600 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 10 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

L Knew Mr Kern very Well . He and Mt Al Weaver coached our Excellent Playoff- Bound MIDGET BASEBALL TEAM and I knew Rick though St Andrew's Elementary and St John's. For three years Mr. Kern got to watch his son Rick dominate defenses with his blazing speed and keen football instincts. Although they lost in the City Championship game which I attended at RFK Stadium I think that backfield with Rick, Rich McArdle , Jay Gallagher and Sophomore Harper was The Best in Several States, including Pennsylvania and Delaware

I know that this is a decade late, but I remember Mr. Kern as a great CYO Midget Baseball Coach, Dad to one of the best football players I've ever seen, Richard Jr , and dad to a whole brood of great kids.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss of husband,
father, and friend. I remember when you opened your home to us as eighth graders to have a boy girl party and we played
twister !!! And who could forget all the football games with Rick as one of our all stars. I felt honored to cheer for the team!!! Thinking of all of you, sending, love, hugs, and prayers. I extend my condolences to all the Kern family on the passing of Mr Kern. The Kern family was such a huge part of the McArdle childhood and many happy times were spent at their house. Mr. Kern was bigger than life and always a good friend to my parents. I will keep you all in my prayers and know your great memories will ease your pain.
