It is hard for us to realize that Bill´s passing was over eight years ago. Bill had the right values and a correct vision. We are sure that he is proud to see that vision being carried forward by all of us who knew him and the next generation of scholars, especially those who have participated in the BAF.

I wrote out a Christmas card to Dr. Anderson and his wife only this morning and did not find out until just now that he had passed. Dr. Anderson was a warm, bright, thoughtful, caring, intelligent man. I last worked with him indirectly as an underling back in the mid 1980's, and yet he always included me as a friend. For his wife Norma, all his family, and those who cared for him, I am so very sorry for your loss, for our loss.

Dr. Anderson had a smile that would always light up the Engineering Department at the National Science Foundation. He will be truly missed.

We express our sincere condolences to Norma and family. Bill extended the knowledge base with his earliest works on such tragedies as the 1964 Alaskan earthquake, civil disturbances within the U.S.A., Curacao, and elsewhere as well as numerous other topics. In his decades long tenure at the National Science Foundation, World Bank, and later, the National Academy of Sciences, Bill facilitated the development of both professional networks and individual scientists. When you dealt with Bill, it always was about you, never about him. He expanded the frontiers of knowledge and growth within individuals and institutions with a style of gentleness, compassion, mutual respect, and intellectual rigor.
Our multi-decade friendship was capstoned recently with a visit to mountain vistas accessible only on foot or four-wheel drive conveyances, followed by neighbor visits, highly personal late night conversations comingled with sips of wine and good food. These times of sharing with this special couple will remain frozen in our minds and hearts forever. Thanks Bill, and you too Norma, for making our lives so much more than they would have been without your friendship. As we say here in our mountain community, Not goodbye, but "Till next time."
