Bill was my neighbor. He and my late husband spent many hours together over the thirteen and a half years that my husband dealt with lung cancer, and after he died, Bill "took care of me". He called often to see how I was doing, picked up groceries for me when I had the 'flu which he was convinced was a "swine flu", often brought me fruit when he'd bought too much for himself and Fran of simply picked up some for me too, and frequently brought me articles he thought I should read. He'd spray poison ivy on my lot (he knew I wouldn't) and I'd stop my car to chat with him as I left or returned to my house. He took care of my house and my mail when I went overseas on several occasions and would have milk and bread and eggs in the house for me when I returned. He was a very good, caring friend and a wonderful neighbor. It feels lonely here without him!

I shall always remember Bill as a gentle man who was completely devoted to his wife, Frances. Our times together were always so pleasant. Lillian Dartnall, Cincinnati, Ohio

Bill's many professional accomplishments speak for themself. He was also a friendly and generous host when I (Fran's second cousin), and more recently my husband and I, visited from North Carolina. My husband and I, recreational bicyclists, admired his commuting to work by bicycle for so long. His sudden death was a great shock and I will miss him as I know his many colleagues and close friends will. Their loving care of Fran at this time is so appreciated.
