We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Frank D. Bryant Jr., US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of and remember one of the truly great people that we had the pleasure of meeting, although for a very short time. We attended the dedication of the Gym at Luke AFB and were honored to be among his friends and family. Janice & Sean, Bruiser was inspiring to know. Whenever we had conversations, Bruiser did not talk to you, he talked ‘with you'. And… he never let a conversation end without mentioning both Sean and Janice in our conversations. We think of you often Bruiser. You're our inspiration to make how we interact with the world, tomorrow… be better than the way we interacted with the world on the previous day. We know that God has you in a very special place, by his side and that you are watching over Janice and Sean and all of your pals in the Air Force. Very Respectfully, Lori & G-II

This is time of the year when I think of Frank most often. State wrestling tournaments are getting ready to start and I remember how he worked to achieve his goal, a state championship and an appointment to the Air Force Academy. The appointment to the Air Force Academy allowed him to achieve his goal being a fighter pilot. In 15 years of coaching I only had one state champion, but what a champion! Over the years, working with at risk kids, I have told the story of Frank and his goal. He truly is a hero.

I had the pleasure of flying with Bruiser as my instructor at Columbus AFB, MS. To this day, I remember how hard he would laugh at our de-brief about how many G's I would pull in the pattern. He was great instructor and a better friend. Bruiser, I plan to recogize you at my upcoming retirement ceremony. Thank you for all the good times. RIP my friend.

To the family and friends of Lt. Col. Frank D. Bryant:
Remembering Frank on the anniversary of his passing. May our fallen heroes never be forgotten.

John Howard

April 27, 2012

I had the distinct pleasure of working and living with Frank at the Afghan Air Force Thunder Lab. Frank had an amazing impact on the young Afghan Lieutenants. He taught them lessons on leadership, teamwork and integrity that they will keep for a lifetime.

Frank was also an inspiration to the US and British Advisers. His “can-do” attitude was infectious and his outstanding example of officership was a great motivation to us all. His physical fitness level was also unbelievable. He was the only one of us that could handle Col Rice's ridiculously challenging “Pain Train” workout on Sunday mornings at 0500.

On many evenings Frank and I was spend the time unwinding from the events of the day. We would share a laugh at some of the shenanigans that the Afghan Lieutenants would try to pull on us or commiserate about some of the annoyances of the deployment. Invariably, the conversation would focus on our families back home. Frank absolutely adored Sean and Janice and always talked about being excited to return to them. They were his motivation.

I still distinctly remember April 27th 2011. I remember shaking Frank's hand as he headed to the Command and Control Center and exchanging a couple of light hearted one-liners. I still find it hard to believe that was the last time I would see him. I miss his sense of humor and good hearted nature. He was a great officer and friend.

On this tragic anniversary, I remember Frank and the eight 438th AEW teammates who made the ultimate sacrifice. They will never be forgotten.

Very Respectfully,
John Howard

LITTLE BROTHER IN ARMS

To me, he is my little brother, Frank "Freaky" Diehl Bryant Jr.; to others, he is Lt. Col. Frank "Bruiser" Diehl Bryant Jr.
To me, he was the one who saluted me in play; to others, he was the one that saluted them in honor.
To me, he was the person that I learned to ride bikes with; to others, he was the person that mountain biked with them.
To me, he was the one that I built forts with in the backyard; to others, he was the one that lived in "forts" with them.
To me, he built jets out of Lego's; to others, he built men to fly the jets.
To me, he was the one that I walked to the bus stop with; to others, he was the one that they walked to the flightline with.
To me, he was the one I watched Saturday morning cartoons with; to others, he was the one they viewed flight plans with.
To me, he always went WAY too fast; to others, he excelled at going fast.
To me, he was the one I threw bombs of snowballs at; to others, he was the one who dropped bombs of another kind.
To me, he was the one that I laughed with at the dinner table; to others, he was the one they laughed with at the officer's club.
To me, he was the boy I watched to grow into an outstanding young man; to others, he was an absolute giant among men.
To me, he was the one who I was protective of; to others, he was the protector.
To me, he is my friend; to others, he is their friend.
To me, he is my family; to others, he is their family.
To me, he is my Little Brother; to others, he is their Brother in Arms.

I Love You Little Brother and I miss you SO MUCH.

Dear Janice, Sean and the Bryant Family,

Frank was an amazing man, a true friend and the ultimate professional...I am absolutely humbled to have known him. I became friends with Frank while learning Dari in DC and went on to join him in training at Ft Dix and served in Afghanistan during the same period. Frank was full of life and energy and was so easy to get to know...we had many laughs together throughout our training! In Afghanistan, he truly believed in the mission and enthusiastically welcomed the challenge.

I saw Frank a few times while in country and every time I did Frank expressed how rewarding his work was there...he would say you have to come check out the Thunder Lab. He knew he was making a difference in the lives of countless Afghans...I know he was as well, because he did for me...ever since the 1st day we met! Frank has forever left me and all those he's touched better than he found us. His enthusiasm to tackle new challenges, drive for excellence and enjoyment in life was contagious...and drove others to want to be like him. I thank God for having been blessed by Frank Bryant and pray that God continue to hold Frank and his family in his arms.

Dear Bryants,
These things last forever: faith, hope and love. Thank you for inspiring us with your demonstration of all three.

As I read your tributes and many others over the last few months, a Kipling poem came to mind. I submit that Frank Bryant, Jr. qualified with high honors for the the title of "a true man." Here is the last stanza of the poem.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

With love,
Owen Lovejoy

We celebrated your birthday, Frank, on Saturday, the 13th.
Amie,Jackie,Aubrey,Henry,and Stephen came over.
Of course we had shrimp....and I baked a cheescake, too. It was a wonderful celebration of your birhtday- one day after your Godfather's birthday -Coach Bussard- and one day before your Grandfather's birthday, Baker Bryant.
It was a happy day 38 years ago on August 13, when a couple of hours after noon, your were born. I thank God for giving the gift of all of our children to us, and I always have felt that way. May God continue to bless each and every one of us.

I was blessed to have known Frank at the Academy. He was a great guy and someone I had called friend. Over the years after graduation, we went our separate ways and have lost touch. When I had heard of this tragedy, I still felt as I had lost a good friend. My fondest memory was a bunch of us were driving back to the Academy one summer and stopping in TN to pick him up to continue our journey westward. That was the first time I had ever gone knee boarding and have yet to go since that summer. Farewell my friend and may you rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to the Bryant family who lost a wonderful and talented Father, son, brother, uncle and friend to many.

I had the privilege of working with Bruiser in Afghanistan. I rotated in just two weeks after he did and worked directly with him in helping to develop a command and control system for the Afghan Air Force.

The first thing that I nooticed when I met Bruiser was his drive and dedication to the mission of improving the Afghans' situation. He had the ability to inspire people to work hard just through his own example of dedication. For example, even though we had interpreters, Bruiser always worked to speak Dari fluently and would sparingly use interpreters for only when he wanted to make sure his point was being made. I could see the the room light up when he would hold discussions in their language.

Anyone who worked with Bruiser can all attest to what a dedicated, and stand-out person he was. Anytime, I was frustrated with the the lack of progress our "mentorees" displayed or had doubts about the purpose of the mission, Bruiser always had words of encouragement and that indomitable spirit to keep working on being better. Even during our down time, Bruiser was always at his best. As those in militay know, during deployments you often pass time by making wisecracks and ribbing each other for fun. Bruiser's wit and one-liners always had the office laughing and when it came time to work out, you didn't want to slack off when Bruiser was around because he always gave 100% as a standard.

I truly treasure the time I spent working with you at the ACCC and in the J3 office. The last time we saw each other you were headed out for R&R in Hawaii with your family and I was rotating home. I never said goodbye, just "see you later" because I figured our paths would cross again later in life. But now on Memorial Day, I want to say farewell friend, I'm proud to have worked with you and glad to have known you. God bless.

I had the privilege of calling Frank my friend. I also had the phenomenal good fortune of having him as one of my instructors in the T-37 flight that I commanded at Columbus AFB. I did not meet a harder worker, better instructor, or more-respected officer in all my years there.

Frank so inspired all of the instructors in my flight at Columbus that we all banded together to pick up his workload for a few weeks to enable him to reach his goal of wrestling for the Air Force. Even in his first assignment, Frank was a standout, destined for greatness.

Janice & Sean, your husband/father, was and will remain a hero of mine. Knowing Frank made my life richer, and I know he inspired all who met him to reach for greatness--as he did.

You will remain in my thoughts and prayers. Beyond the 529, if there's any way I can help, please contact me: [email protected]

My wife, Lori, and I, G-II (G2), retired USAF, got to know Bruiser, very briefly… just before he deployed… but what a lasting impression he made!

Although we only met Frank a few times before he deployed, he left a lasting impression with us. His obvious love for his family and for his country was dominant at every encounter. At every meeting, he talked about Janice and Sean. Every time he said Janice’s name, there was a twinkle in his eye and a soft, glowing smile that danced on his face. He was like a school boy in love for the very first time, or perhaps, he seemed more like a newlywed, not yet back from his honeymoon. Whatever it was, it was abundantly obvious that he was so much in love with Janice and so missed his son, that it ached to not have them near him. We are truly honored to have met Frank and now to be able to call Janice, Frank and Sean our friends for life.

Lori & I have also pledged $200 from every real estate transaction we close, for the next five years, to the “Sean Bryant 529 College Fund”. Those funds should start flowing, to Sean’s College Fund, by the first of June 2011.

Today I am remembering what a wonderful artist you were, Frank. I remember you won an art award in kindergarten at Bonny Kate. I treasure the artwork I have hanging in our home that you have done- Chief Joseph, my giraffe, and two you did in high school. You had told me once that you wanted the one with the dog face background with the 4 young people "doing their thing"- a scuba diver, a snow boarder, a rock climber, and a wind sailer. I decided that I would frame this particular one with plexiglass, as I could see it moving from place to place too often- but I never did get it to you as yet, so I still have it here and see it everyday!! And I love it.
My favorite one is the giraffe. You nailed the eye....and you gave it to me when you were in Columbus, MS. You said you didn't think it was all that good- but you thought I might like to have it. That was one time you may have told a little white lie- as it is a treasure that I have enjoyed for quite some time now.
I have not framed the "cougar cat" as I am not a cat lover. But I do have it, and perhaps frame it, and give it to someone else.
Of course, I cannot forget the artwork you and Jackie did on my head when we were "celebrating" the loss of all of my hair due to chemo. I only asked you to do a smiley face on the back of my head- perhaps just a 10 minute job- but no- you two had to keep on and I sat for two hours while you kept on painting- I loved the bluejay , the maltese cross, the waterfall, and the dogwood.
You had given my an "IOU" for a gift one time to do something for the front door- I never did get that one.......but I was waiting patiently, as you have just been so busy with the "other" things in your life.
I love you, Frank, and so happy all of us here have had such a wonderful life together. I am proud you found Janice and even though you two did not tell us RIGHT away that "you" were pregnant when you found out- what an absolute joy it was for me to listen and watch in awe as you experienced the most fulfilling time of all - as a husband and a father. I heard and saw your happiness. I am grateful that the Lord so blessed you. Your smile definately took on a whole new meaning, and it shows in your Hawaiian pictures of you and your family on your 15 day leave in January and Febuary of this year.
Maybe I will write more later- don't know right now.

I remember wrestling with Frank on the mat in high school. He was always trying new things to get you on your back. He not only found ways but he shared them with his teammates. Frank was always there to encourage each of us and we always rooted for him every step of the way. He was a genuine person, caring and thoughtful. Frank, you are already missed but will never be forgotten!

It has taken me a while to write down my thoughts and feelings about Frank. He truly was one of a kind and a coach’s dream. As a student he made sure that his academics were covered. As an athlete he made sure he was ready to compete at the highest level. There is no way I can adequately express my admiration of Frank, I can only relate a few of my experiences with him and it will be easy to understand why I think he was the ultimate student and athlete.

The first time I saw Frank, he was a skinny 90 lb freshman walking down the middle of a hallway crowded with seniors, not a normal place for a freshman at the beginning of a school year. In one of our first meetings I learned that his goals were to be a wrestler and a fighter pilot. His sister had brought him to a wrestling meet during his eighth grade year and he decided that was what he wanted to do.

Frank was the most motivated young man I have ever met. Freshman year was not kind to him as a wrestler; as a matter of fact he had a loosing record, but qualified for the regional tournament. He was like a sponge and was constantly learning. Sophomore year was much better and he again qualified for the regional tournament and was within one match of qualifying for the state tournament. During that next summer he went to Ben Peterson’s Camp of Champions. He had always exhibited leadership qualities, but now he became the wrestling team leader. His junior year he finished fifth at 112 in the state tournament. Back he went to Peterson’s camp. When he came back he was ready to be a state champion and help his teammates achieve their best.

Frank was on a mission. If he won a state championship, he would get an appointment to the Air Force Academy. During his senior year, there were only two things necessary for Frank to win an appointment to the Academy. One was to maintain his grades and the second was to win a state championship. During the season, his only loss was to a Chattanooga Central wrestler by a pin. Frank advanced to the finals of the state wrestling tournament and his opponent in the finals match was the Chattanooga Central wrestler. He threw Frank to his back in the first 30 seconds of the first period, but could not pin him. In the second period Frank scored on the CC wrestler. In the third period Frank threw the CC wrestler to his back, pinned him, and became the 1991 119 Tennessee State Champion.

Frank got up from the mat, took off his headgear and folded it and shook hands with his opponent. Then he walked over to shake hands with me, and with our good friend “Tater” Vineyard, who had helped him throughout his high school career. His first goal to be a state champion was now complete and he was on his way to his next goal, which, I am sure, he accomplished with the same work habits and persistence he displayed as a wrestler.

Hardly a week has gone by, since that 1991 match that I haven’t thought about Frank. I have used Frank’s story of dedication to try and inspire other students and athletes. During my fifteen years at Karns High School as wrestling coach, I coached over 500 young men, but there was only one Frank Bryant and in my book there will never be another.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Bruiser while we were both in Abu Dhabi, he was a humble man always looking to help. He was a joy to work with and watch his love of flying, it was pure pleasure for him and he was a natural. I really enjoyed laughing at his stories about the kids in his building running up and down the hallways and how he had to disconnect his doorbell. Bruiser you will be missed, the world has lost an incredible man and the lord has gained an exceptional flight lead.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I Salute You.

What can you say about such a wonderful person? I was lucky to have met Frank right after he graduated from the Academy and we quickly became friends. He was the kind of guy who always had a smile no matter what (even when you crash his brand new Jeep). He was generous, kind, and so much fun. I was heartbroken to hear he was taken away too early.

You'll be missed Frank but the memories will be cherished. Thank you for the gift of your friendship.

May his family find some comfort in knowing he was so special to so many. Our prayers are with you.

Frank, Pat, Amie, Ray, Janice, Sean and the rest of the Bryant Family. I would like to say how honored I am to have known Frank Jr. I spent alot of time within the Bryant family from working for Frank and Pat and I was able to get to know Little Frank. You gave me the opportunity to babysit your children at times which was a great joy. I remember Little Frank as being such an active and outgoing young boy and growing into the wonderful young man that he was. So many memories flood my mind when I think about him. From the time he had the fish hook in his thigh, the time we thought he swallowed his retainer, the time spent learning to SCUBA dive together as well as the time he wrecked the scout. I can not say enough about Little Frank. As we grew older and drifted away, I was able to keep up with him through family and of course facebook. I loved seeing his smiling face and the joy he showed when with his lovely wife Janice and beautiful son Sean. What a blessing it was for him to find love and love fully. I will never forget him and I pray that the memories and joy of the 37 short years that you had Little Frank will ease your pain and give you comfort. Know that he is at peace and you will see him again on the other side. I love you all and extend my condolences to you.

LtCol Bryant and Family, I worked with Bruiser in the 63rd FS. I was the lead pro super on the mx side. He always had a smile and treated the maintainers with respect. I had the pleasure of working with him on a couple of projects in 2009 and again I was impressed with his sincere and humble communication with the maintenance Airman. I am deeply sorry for your family's loss. He was an outstanding officer and Airman. My families thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in peace sir.

I knew Frank from Doyle Middle School and Karns High. At Doyle, the first time I met him I thought he was an easy mark to give a hard time since he was so little. I told him he had a sharp pointy nose in front of Julie Wyrick and he responded with "Better that than a round one with zits all over it!" looking at me with his mocking smile. I knew to not mess with Frank and his sharp wit from then on. Our family moved just about a mile down the lake from Frank when I was a sophomore at Karns. We had many good times skiing ans kneeboarding in the summer. He was the most driven individual I knew and when he wanted to accomplish something, he did not rest until it was completed. I know at one point he spent several weeks nearly decapitating himself to finally land an aerial barrel-roll on his kneeboard. And land it he did! A feat he could nearly dupliate at will from then on...impressive! That was just how Frank approached challenges. Anyone on the wrestling team could tell you the same thing. He was driven. Although I can't say he was a good driver. I spent many an evening white-knuckled as a passenger in his vehicles. I think Robby Johnson could attest to this better than I. I believe he carried his desire for speed into his career as a pilot. Hopefully that is where it stayed. But beyond these memorable traits what I will miss the most of Frank is that I could tell him anything. I trusted Frank completely and sadly I cannot say that about many friends I have known. He was the nicest, smartest, and most loyal friend I have ever had and he will be deeply missed. I know that from the limited time I had in Frank's life the painfull loss I feel is like a pale shadow compared to his family's profound feelings for him. My sincere condolences go out to all of Frank's family. Take comfort in knowing that he is in Heaven smiling down on you now. May God bless you and give you strength through this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

There are no words to describe the sadness that is felt by so many who knew Frank. I, for one, have only the best memories from high school, to summer and Christmas breaks in college and beyond. I will never forget Frank's kindness, his compassion and his drive to be the best and how infectious it was because it made us all want to be the best. What we've lost, Heaven has gained. Thank you for being one of the best friends I could ever ask for. May your family be comforted by God's grace. God bless you all.
