PLATT
James D., age 94 of Carolina Shores, NC and formerly of New Milford, NJ died Friday, August 1, 2014. Beloved husband of Kathryn (nee Dann). James was predeceased by his loving first wife Marie H. (nee Spina). He was the devoted father of Joanne Umstead and her late husband Darryl. James was also predeceased by his dear sons William Platt and James D. Platt, III. Loving grandfather of Douglas Lee Umstead. Cherished great-grandfather of Ryan, Samantha, Jesse, and Brandon. James graduated from Teaneck H.S. in '37 and later Fairleigh Dickinson University in '53. He was Scoutmaster for Troop 291 in New Milford ('61-'66), a past member of the New Milford Board of Education ('67-'70), and a trustee of the New Milford Swim Club ('66-'68). He retired from NJ Bell Telephone after 35 years as a Service Manager and District Engineer. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America – H.G. McCully Chapter Hackensack/Englewood Council. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #503, Calabash, NC. James' military service began in the New Jersey National Guard ('39-'40), he was a Staff Sergeant in the 104th Combat Engineer Battalion ('40-'42), a Lieutenant Signal Corps ('42-'43), Captain in the Corps of Engineers ('43-'46), a Major in the Signal Corps (Reserve) ('46-'65), and Retired Reserve ('65-'80). Family and friends are invited to visit Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck. Funeral service Saturday 8:30 AM from the Volk Leber Funeral Home, then to Ascension R.C. Church for a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial. Interment to follow at Hackensack Cemetery. I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Platt, he will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Mr. Platt was blessed to live a long, interesting life. Psalms 90:10 says that those who live to be 80 and over have extra strength, he was blessed to have that. May you keep fond memories of him in your heart always.
