Richard E. Weaver of Niceville, Florida, died peacefully at home on Sunday, the 29th of May 2016, of complications following a heart attack earlier in the year. He was 88 years old, a faithful servant of God, generous and loving husband and father.
He was born May 23rd, 1928 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Francis (formerly McFadden) and Ray L. Weaver. He grew up a rowdy child of the inner city, protective big brother to Mildred, and graduated William Penn High School with scholarships in both football and baseball.
He met his lifelong love, Flora Anne Stence, during her last year of nursing school, at a soda shop, and they married on September 11th, 1948 at Heckton United Methodist Church on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. Little did they know, all four of their children would also hold weddings in the same small chapel.
Richard joined the Army Air Corps, Air Weather Service and they embarked on a 20 year AF career, living in South Dakota, Delaware, Alabama, New Foundland, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Hawaii, Cape Cod and back to Pennsylvania, welcoming four children, livestock, and pets along the way. "Dick" also had a few remote assignments setting up weather sites in Morocco, Turkey, and one that had him guarding a runway with an anti-aircraft gun at Cape Newenham, Alaska.
"Dick" retired from the USAF in 1971 and built a home in Fishing Creek Valley, Pa. He began as a carpenter at Rite Aid Corp and retired from there as the Director of the Carpentry Shop, responsible for building and repairing stores up and down the eastern seaboard. He loved woodworking, hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles. He was an avid coin collector and one of his greatest joys was a year-long cross country motor home trip he and Flora completed after they finally retired.
A longstanding member of the Heckton United Methodist Church, and caretaker for many years of that same chapel where they were married, Richard moved with Flora to Niceville in 1998 and has attended Cross Point UMC.
"Dick" is survived by his sweetheart, Flora Anne, and children: Richard A. Weaver and spouse Cynthia, of Harrisburg, PA; Julie Staats of Niceville, FL; Mary Benson and spouse Lee, of Niceville, FL; Wendy Meehan and spouse Vincent, of Blacksburg, VA. Grandchildren include: Richard L. Weaver, Jessica Hennion, Aubrey Scrodin, Victor Moten, Jr, Erica Bellamy, Chase Weaver, Patrick Moten, Melanie Meehan, Olivia Meehan, Bryndon Weaver, Aleise Weaver.
