Chor Daines Obituary

Daines, Chor Cheng 03/24/1938 ~ 07/25/2014 ESCONDIDO -- My beloved, beautiful and courageous wife of 47 years, Chor Cheng, 76, passed peacefully in her sleep at home on July 25 2014 after battling Stage IV lung and brain cancer for almost three years. She was born in 1938 in Swatow, China and was the fourth child of ten of the Heng family. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Malaysia to avoid the communist state. She was preceded in death by her eldest brother, Phillip; and has seven surviving siblings: sisters, Chor Hoon, Chor Chee, Chor Kiow, Chor San and Chor Yek, and her two brothers, Ming Swee and Ming Kiat. Cheng was a very family oriented person, who enjoyed getting together with family, eating, laughing and cooking. She has numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, as well as many God children. She enjoyed being with all of our many friends and family. Her marriage to Roger Daines was a wonderful and blessed marriage of 47 years. They met and were married in Seremban, Malaysia when Roger was serving in the British Army. Cheng was a school teacher in the Seremban Anglo Chinese School teaching English as a second language. In 1968, they moved back to England and she traveled with Roger during his Army career to Germany, where Cheng ran the regimental library. After leaving the Army, they moved back to the UK and Cheng worked in the reference section of the Wigan library, books were her passion. In 1978, they immigrated to the USA to be with the family and moved to Escondido in 1980 where they have lived for the past thirty- four years in the same house. In 1984, they became US citizens. Cheng worked in the Escondido Public Library for fourteen years and her husband Roger worked as a Public Works Inspector with the City of Escondido and after retiring became a professional Commercial photographer, gaining his Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees. Cheng was very involved with the photo business as well and was an honorary member of the Professional Photographers of California. In 1988, Cheng completed a course with the "Institute of Children's Literature" and was awarded a diploma for writing for "Children and Teenagers." Cheng and Roger have no children and lived for each other. They enjoyed travel and Cheng especially enjoyed the National Parks. Their travels took them around the world; Malaysia, Europe, Cambodia, Vietnam., South Korea, Canada Mexico and England, to name a few. A "Celebration of Life" memorial will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Escondido, 341 S. Kalmia St., CA 92025 at 1pm on Saturday, August 2, 2014. If you wish, donations can be made in Cheng's name to the American Cancer Society, https:// donate.cancer.org. They have been an amazing source of help and inspiration to us. On a personal note I would like to thank all the staff of Kaiser Permanente for their wonderful medical expertise, compassion and help.

Uncle Roger, I wanted to let you know we will always remember Auntie Cheng. She was always my ideal of a lady, and still is. Graceful, thoughtful, poised, never had a negative thing to say. I will miss her very much. Love Siang Y

What an inspiring woman! May you find comfort in the promise that one day soon our Creator will restore us "fresher than youth...and return to the days of youthful vigor" (Job 33:25). Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Roger, I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Cheng. I always enjoyed chatting with you both when you would come into the store. Cheng was a special lady, always with kind words. I was grateful you were able to bring her in so often. Many blessings to you and your family.
