I remember first meeting Dan when i became Carmen's mentee and he had come to visit her on USD campus. He was really a sweet person and for the brief moments we spoke, i thought he was very interesting. My condolences to the family.

Dear Carmen and Family,
I was so sorry for your loss and for losing Dan so soon after his retirement. I have to say Dan was someone I had the good fortune to learn from. His understanding of public policy and politics was astonding. He will be missed but never forgotten. We speak of him often and fondly at the Port. The stories of Dan will be shared and retold for many, many years to come.

One special memory of Dan was sharing a meal at Red Sails with him and Carmen where both the wine and conversation flowed freely. Our talk ranged from local and global politics, Port issues, books, academic issues, and our kids -- Raf and Sumali. Dan warmly shared his knowledge with a twinkle in his eye. His legacy lives on in the warmth, helpfulness, and conversation of Rafael.

I was very sad to hear that Dan has gone on to a better place. I used to go to lunch with him and Bruce when I work there; a funny guy. I don't believe he ever stop smiling!! I wish you the best.

Dear Carmen & Family,
Dan Wilkens was my mentor while I worked under his direction for seven years. I always looked up to Dan, not just because he's tall, but because of his integrity and his natural leadership style that I'll never forget. Dan had a strong influence on me and contributed to my success as a city planner and a leader in government. I have the highest regard for Dan; a kind man; a man that was true to his word; and a man that held firm on his values. I learned so much from Dan. I owe him so much. This world will miss Dan Wilkens!

Dear Carmen and family members,
Dan will be remembered by the San Diego Port Tenants Associaiton forever. We not only considered him a collegue but a friend. When he worked at the Port he always had his door left wide open and listened to our concerns. He was a great mediator and a good problem solver. When I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer he was the first friend that called me and offered his knowledge about this disease. Dan's legacy will forever be remembered.
Warm Regards, Sharon Cloward and the San Diego Port Tenants Association

Dear Carmen and Family
I am so saddened to learn of Dan's passing. He was a good friend and a positive force in the world. Having worked with Dan for over 20 years, I have several memorable stories that I hope to tell his family sometime. Maybe we can meet at the French Bakery in Escondido sometime to reminisce! I am so sorry for your loss. His is a loss for all of us.

My thoughts and prayers are with Carmen and the family. Dan was a wonderful person to work for at the Port of San Diego and always had a smile on his face. I especially enjoyed his story about his love of kitchen dish towels. I will celebrate his life by remembering his warm smile and all the good memories I have of him. Carmen, may you and your family find comfort at this time. The night will shine a little more brightly as Mr. Wilkens shines from above.

Dear Carmen and Family,
I will always remember Dan's graciousness and that little sparkle of laughter in his eyes. May he rest in peace; may you find the peace that he would want for you.

Pausing this holiday season to remember the legacy of one of the beloved leaders at the Port of San Diego with respect and admiration. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Dan, who was a spirit and beacon to the Port as a valuable member of the Executive Leadership Team. Dan will be missed by the staff who were fortunate to share in his wit, witness his humbleness, and cherish his friendship. God's speed and may you rest in peace. My sincerest sympathy is extended to the family amidst this most difficult time, with special blessings to you during this holy season.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I know it's hard to lose someone so dear especially during the holidays. I've known Mr. Wilkens when I worked at the Port of San Diego. Mr. Wilkens was someone that always has a welcoming smile. And always, he has shown me that smile everytime he comes over here at the Airport Authority for meetings. Mr. Wilkens, may you rest in peace.

I was so saddened to hear about his passing. He was the first customer at our coffee shop (cafe ole) and he always treated us kindly. He will be missed.

Very sad to hear of Dan's passing. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him at the Port for a few years. He definitely stood apart from the masses. His moving on is only another example of a man going on to greater things; those left behind are the ones who suffer. Sorry for your great loss.

Dan will be missed by all those who worked with him at the Port. He was funny, kind, and an all around good person.
