On behalf of the Armstrong family, who saw six of our seven children pass through the halls of Kearny High School, two of whom played for Coach Slater, I want to extend our condolences to the Slater and Komet families in this time of grief. One of my fondest memories of Coach Slater was when I came home after a football game to find him in my kitchen drinking a beer at a Booster Club party my parents were hosting. I will never get the image out of my head. My teacher in my kitchen and drinking beer! I hope you're tipping a beer with my dad in heaven, Coach Slater. RIP!
You will be missed. Coach Slater was one of the most influential men in my life. For me, coach Slater was a true mentor. He helped me in many ways with my life. I will miss him.
I loved my uncle Birt and he is the end of a great Slater era. I can still remember when all the Slater's would get together for Thanksgiving or just some big family dinner. There was lots of cigar smoking and arguing. He is the last of the Slater's. My uncle George, my aunt Katie and my dad have all passed away. This is truly a sad time. God be with you. Love Meighan
Birt Slater was the most influential man I had as a teenager. I always looked forward to his 'words of wisdom' at the start of every football practice. To this day I still use 'The Slater Drill' to honor him when we do our favorite tackling drill. I will never miss you Birt, because you have been with me ever sense I met you on the KHS practice field in 1961. Class of '65
My first encounter with Coach Slater was at the Komet's spring ball when I was in the 9th grade. 49 years later I still reminisce about my time playing for coach and with the guys;not only learning about the game of football but life lessons that I shared with my two sons and kids that I coached-"when the coach stops yelling, that's when you should be concerned". Coach Slater was a big man and had a big heart. He will be missed by many. Our hearts and prayers are with his family.

Dear Slater family, Please accept our condolences. We are so sorry for the loss of Birt. He mean't so much to us and he touched the lives of countless people from his players, students and friends. Birt gave me the opportunity to get into coaching at Kearny. I was a wet behind the ears rookie, and he believed enough in me to hire me. 34 years later I was still at Kearny. He was a great friend and he taught me alot more than just football I thought the world of Birt and will deeply miss him.
Tom Barnett and family
Coach Slater, thank you for being such an inspiration for me to learn how to do the right things in life. By teaching me to work hard and give 100% no matter what, you instilled a work ethic I have had ever since you were put into my life. Winning a championship as a result of your leadership helped me to aspire to achieve a lot of things in my life that had nothing to do with sports. God Bless you and your family. I am forever grateful you were a part of my life.
John Carter - Class of 1974
Coach, You were "larger than life" to many of us coming up through the ranks at KHS. You made the "stripes" the most dreaded uniform in the San Diego CIF. But you will be remembered by all that you touched as a leader and example of doing the right thing even if it was not the easiest path to take. You always had the respect of every player that was fortunate enough to have played for you and I can say from personal experience that every Song and Cheerleader at KHS saw you as the best looking male on campus! I will remember the last KHS golf outing that you attended and keep that photo in my mind. RIP coach.
Rick and Kathy (Field) Henry
Coach, you and your teams provided many a thrilling Friday night when I was at Kearny (64-67) - Lee Williams, Class of '67
So many of us who played for Coach and were taught by him on the field as well as in the classroom have much to thank him for. You were our teacher, mentor, and friend. Those of us who have played for you owe you much. You have helped mold us into the men we are today. We thank you and your lovely wife for all you have done for us. I will never forget you and the inspiration you have been in my life and career. Rest in peace Birt we all love you!
God Speed & RIP, Coach. You are missed & blessed. Torb ~ Kearny '69
Coach Slater was more than a football coach at Kearny--he taught many lessons as well as coached many outside of football. His football 'genius' and friendship helped many be successful in life. He was a good influence on our individual time lines.
Richard C. Griffiths, Class of 65
I will miss you coach. You changed my Life for the better! You kept it real about football and life. Thanks for accepting me to the CIF team even though I was a transfer and you gave me an opportunity to start and finish my HS career with you. Other than my dad I could not have a better adult figure in my. RIP Coach

I am happy for you Coach, because you have no more sadness, nor sorrow, nor trouble. I am happy for myself and for all the lives you have influenced in a good direction. In the immortal words of John Donne "one short sleep past and we wake eternally, and death shall be no more." I suppose we will all see you again "soon".
Coach, you will be sadly missed. You taught us more than to be good football players. You taught us to become young men. Honored to have played for you, honored to have played for you the last year you coached Kearny. Roger Enloe Class of '78

There isn't a week that goes by that I don't remember one or more of the life lessons I learned from "Coach". May the words and memories of those whose lives he touched comfort Evelyn and family during this time of grieving. May God bless you "Coach".
TO THE FAMILY, FRIENDS, STUDENTS AND ATHLETES OF BIRT SLATER: Oh what a grand man was he! I never had the chance to play for Birt, but he was a highly respected person in the eyes of my Lincoln HS teamates (1955-57). I will always cherish them moments we would laff and share tales about our various past athletic encouters. Many of our "by-chance" meetings would occur at Bully's East, the Dell Mar pony oval or oldtimer lucheons at the Bali Hai. His coaching skills shared at San Diego and Kearny High Schools enriched the athletic and life skills of so many. To know him was to deeply love and respect him! On a final note, I once more time must say to Birt: "You know Cleveland "Smiley" Jones had his knee touch the ground just before he hauled 95 yards for a touchdown in our 1956 Balboa Stadium tilt."
Coach Slater contributed to a tradition and a culture of excellence, not only for the football program but for every discipline on the Kearny campus. It didn't matter what the sport, ROTC, music, Junior Achievement, and academics, if you were a Kearny Komet you not only were something while in school, you became an outstanding member of society! Today, we have members of the Kearny Nation that are successful, contributing members of society, which is a result of a collaborative effort by teachers, administrators, community and parents were inspired by a winning football program. Thanks Coach, your influence is appreciated. RIP. Class of 1974!
Thanks Coach for the coaching and kindness you showed us when you were operation manager at the sports arena

Many times, throughout these past 45 years, I've thought of Coach Slater and remembered his words of wisdom and counseling with fondness. He will forever be an integral part of my warm memories of my high school years at Kearny (Sept' 65 - June '68). Have very fond memories of Coach Slater Was a great football Coach and mentor. He effected so many of us who played for him in a positive way. To this day I still think of him often.. May he rest in peace Kevin Tucker
Coach Slater was one of the people I consider as having a great and direct impact on my life. He was always open and friendly and a great listener. There were many times that he would greet me in the hallway at school and instinctively know that I needed someone to talk with and confide in and always shared great sympathy and advice.
His genuine love of people showed in everything he did and translated to one of the best football teams I can remember. I will always remember watching him along the football field and "quietly" moving to the beat of Rockin' Rhythm.
God Bless you Coach!
