Kimberly Schleef Obituary

Doede Schleef, Kimberly LA JOLLA -- Kimberly Jade Doede Schleef was born on May 11, 1969 and, surrounded by her family, passed away on January 10, 2014 in La Jolla. In her 44 years, Kimberly lived life to the fullest and made sure she left an indelible mark on the world. Kimberly was born in Hinsdale, Illinois and moved to La Jolla at the age of twelve. She graduated from The Bishop's School in La Jolla and then received her Bachelors degree at the University of California, Berkeley. During this period, some of her activities included immunizing six thousand indigenous Guarani people in Paraguay, spending a summer building latrines in Uruguay, working as a doula assisting in the birthing of babies and also helping migrant farm workers in Southern Oregon to receive medical care. Kimberly, fiercely independent, loved to travel (eventually visiting over 40 countries) and after graduating from CAL, took an eight- month solo-backpacking trip throughout Southeast Asia. She then received her Doctor of Osteopathy at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri where she specialized in family practice and osteopathic medicinal manipulation. She completed her internship and residency at Downey Regional Medical Center in Downey, California. She then moved to Portland, Oregon where she had a thriving practice as both a family practice physician and healer. Kimberly felt great joy in helping better the lives of others. Kimberly met the love of her life Dave Schleef at the Burning Man Festival in 1998 and later married in 2001. A deeply spiritual person, she felt a strong connection to the Earth and nature. She was innately maternal, advising and protecting both family members and friends throughout her short life. When Kimberly loved you, she did it with her whole huge beautiful heart. She is survived by her husband, Dave Schleef; her parents, Robert and Nina Doede; her mother, Katherine Doede; her sisters, Erika Doede, Lauren Schwartz and Aubrey Doede; and her brother, Craig Doede. A private family service followed by interment and memorial service for family and friends was held on January 18, 2014 in Portland, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oregon Health & Science University ~ OHSU Knight Cancer Challenge. http://www.ohsu.edu/knightcancerchallenge

I am so sad to learn of Kimberly's passing. I was her residency director at Downey Regional Medical Center. She spent many hours with me in my clinic, so I did get to know her. She always impressed me with her dedication, honesty, and integrity. I knew she would be a terrific physician, but obviously her career and life have been cut short. My condolences to her family. Sincerely, Mark Schneider DO

Dear Bob and Nina and family - my sincerest condolences at the passing of Kim and I wish for you that the peace that comes from your shared memories comfort you. The life she led was truly amazing, and her accomplishments lead me to believe she lived years beyond the 44 she had in this earthly body. The lives she touched will carry her sprit on for a very long time, not just for your family, but those she spent time with around the world who are no doubt also holding on to and honoring her memory. Our heartfelt love, always, Caryn and Randy Westman and family.
