Dr. Cabana was a positive cheerful influence on our campus here at Tradition. He will be missed by his colleagues and students alike. I'm praying that God will comfort and bless each of his family and friends.

Dear Cabana Family,

We will all miss your loved one (Dr. Cabana). He has touched so many of our lives. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from this amazing human being. He sparked my interest in corrections with his exciting stories from the field. His sense of humor and ability to connect with almost everyone he met was incredible. He used his experiences with the death penalty to educate us all about the topic and managed to change quite a few minds in the process. It was a pleasure having him as a professor at USM. I am also immensely grateful for his guidance, encouragement and continued support over the years. My students and I were thrilled beyond belief when he came to speak to us (at Troy University) about his book and the death penalty. They still talk about it to this day. We are all saddened to hear about his death. He was an inspiration to us all and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with you all.

I wish to express my sympathies to the loving family of Dr. Donald Cabana. I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Cabana several years ago when I was a young professor at the University of Nebraska. He was accompanying others on a lecture circuit regarding the death penalty. We enjoyed reminiscing about my home state of Mississippi. The corrections community has lost a giant and a legend.

I came to know Don while he was at the Tradition Campus. I was a part-time chaplain at a prison in Kentucky while a seminary student. We exchanged stories about our experiences in the penal system. I came to know him as a man of faith. We at WCU-Tradition will miss him.

Cabana:

We never did work in that lunch..If I had known a month ago when I spoke to you I would not ever see you again, I wish I could do things different. You were the best friend, mentor and professor. I will miss you so much. I know I will see you again one day. You touched a lot of peoples lives and for our friendship I will always hold you close to my heart. I will continue to pray for Miriam and your children..for as much as you meant to me and my girls I cannot imagine the pain that they are feeling. I will always remember the good times back in college with you, me and michael with indepth discussions about life. I will also remember when I would be making tough decisions in my life and I would call you for advice, and somehow you always knew the right words to say and let me know I was doing what was right. When I see you in heaven I will have to remember all the questions I will have saved up til I see you again. You will me missed by so many, and as for me in the girls you we will always carry you close to our hearts..

Always,
Deb and the girls (Kari, Hannah, Hunter Rose and Hope, Haleigh)...

I met Don at the Jackson County Youth Court in the early 70's. It was always a pleasure to be in his company.

We all feel very honored to have gotten to know Dr. Cabana during his time here at the Tradition campus. He was a dear man and we always enjoyed his lively conversations. He never failed to talk about his family in every conversation. May you all find peace and comfort in the coming days.
