Carl and I grew up together, went to church together, became SCUBA divers in 9th grade together and were going to be junior Jacques Cousteaus together. He was our hero and role model for marine biology. I am deeply saddened by his passing. We both went to the Coast Guard Academy with my dad. Carl went into the USCG while I chose another route, much to my father's objection. Fran, you had a great man as a husband and family man. May you and your family find peace in the Lord. I don't know why he was taken from us but I am sure that God had greater plans for him that none of us will ever know. He is now with his parents, and I am sure he is watching over you and your family as the consummate protector that I knew him to be.

Carl was a great guy. I admired him ever since he came to EPA and became our inside man on the RRT at the Exxon Valdez spill. At each interaction after that Carl showed his expertise, professionalism and dedication to the cause of environmental protection. He was a wonderful person to know and I was deeply saddened by his loss. I just wish I could have told him how valuable he was before he was gone. Please accept my deepest sympathy and hope for your courage to move on without him.

Dear Family, I just this afternoon learned of Carl's passing and I can't comprehend what it can possibly mean to Carl's Family, Friends and Co-Workers. He was a most amazing and influential friend that I knew for over 22 years since the Exxon Valdez days...I have been out of emergency response for several years and was trying to re-connect with Carl when I found out he had passed on. My sincerest condolences to his Family. He will be remembered by so many people for one of the best men we have ever known.

Uncle Carl was always that one Uncle I rarely got to see but that made seeing him all the more special! He had the funniest, most lovable personality and I treasure him always in my heart. He did amazing things with his life and is an inspiration to me - both as a leader and a person who lived life to the fullest!

I remember when Carl was first off to the Coast Guard Academy and he would call in to his home on the weekend. His whole family would jump to the phone and huddle around all eager to talk for the short time he could be on. It was a really touching moment and showed me the great love he had for his family and vice versa. This is quite a shock and my condolences to Bonnie, Fran, their mom and everyone associated with Carl during his life.

Dear Chris and Family,

I was looking through the computer in the hope of locating you and maybe catching up on old times and came upon this in the process. Wow! I'm so sorry. I have very old memories from when Carl was a little boy and I would be at your house. Judy Matott Johnston, Moneta, VA
