Dee Kennedy Obituary

Dee was born Nov. 4, 1928, in La Grande, Ore. She was the 10th of 11 children born to Sophia L. (Hoak) and James E. Twidwell Sr. She spent her childhood in La Grande, Ore., graduating from La Grande High School and Eastern Oregon College (now Eastern Oregon University) with a degree in teaching.
She taught two years in Madras, Ore. In the summer of 1953, she joined the American Youth Hostels group on a bicycle tour of Europe and said it was a wonderful experience. Later she rode with the Hostels group on tours around the Chicago area. She spent six years teaching school in Chicago and four years as a teacher-missionary for the Lutheran Church in Argentina.When she returned from Argentina, she worked as a tutor at the Wicker Park Lutheran Church with Spanish-speaking adults and children. She moved to Alaska in 1980 where she worked for, and retired from, the Head Start Program, helping a new generation of children. Dee was also a longtime volunteer with the Alaskan Workers Association, Workers Benefit Council and the Drop-in Center after school program and other ministries at Central Lutheran Church. She was also secretary of the AA chapter. Dee accepted the Stars of Gold 2007 volunteer award from then-Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell for her volunteerism. Her life was one of helping others. Her love of the Lord shown through all her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Arlo, Jim, Marvin, Gerald and Wilfred (who was killed when his ship went down in WWII); her sisters, Naomi Perry, Elva Quinland and Zella Mae Conner; two infant siblings; three nieces; and one nephew.
She is survived by eight nieces and two nephews; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and by her many wonderful friends.
She may be gone, but she will never be forgotten.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, at Central Lutheran Church, 1420 Cordova Street in Anchorage, beginning at 2 p.m.
